you could just get a finger prick to test for anemia......although some people claim that the finger prick is worse.... If you are less scared of the prick instead of the needle, ask if you can go that route instead.

First off, you should thank your mom for loving you enough to want to make sure your healthy. Secondly, you better get used to needles because you will be exposed to them for the rest of your life. Last....Needles are not that bad so what is all the fuss about. Back in the old days, it was one big a** needle for everyone. Today, the needles are soooo small, you almost don't even notice them more than a small stick then it's all over. When I was in Paramedic school, we had to give ourselves and then our teem partners IV's and draw blood. That's when I noticed the needles got very small. If you know it's just going to be a quick sting, you will be OK. I need to watch to be OK and I learned this not too long ago when I got a shot in the butt and because I wasn't ready, I flinched like a child and got really embarrassed for jumping. I was thinking...what a titty baby but seriously....the needles are very very small. Oh Yea...It's not how long they are, it's how skinny!! and anything over a 12 Gauge is skinny. Good luck and don't forget to tell the Doctor about the lolly pop for being a good girl. lol :)

If you are really afraid of needles because of the pain, then try this. Take a push pin, or safety pin, or anything along those lines, and gentely push it against the skin on the inside of your elbow. This is about how much getting your blood drawn will hurt. There will be a small pintch and then it will take about 10 seconds to fill the tube then they pull the needle out and give you a bandaid. The whole thing takes less than 30 seconds.

hey chick!
i know exactly how you feel. i am terrified of needles, like absolutely terrified. The other week i wasn't feeling well and went to the doctor and she said i needed a blood test. i freaked. i thought no way am i going to do that! but i went to the hospital and got one. when i arrived i was holding back tears i was so scared. i thought i was going to pass out or vomit. then i started shaking like crazy freaking out. i got called into the little room, told the lady i had a massive fear and she was really good with me. in the end it was no where near as bad as i thought. one tiny prick and it was over. as long as you don't look then there is no problem. here's what to do though.....1) tell them about your fear...when i did the lady told me how common it was and she knew exactly how to handle me. 2) ask to lie down while they do it, it makes you feel heaps better and you can't see anything they are doing, 3) take someone with you so you can squeeze their hand and 4) when i was there she told me about this cream that all blood test places have and it's like an anaesthetic cream which they use for little kids and people who are really scared. they rub it on where the needle will go and you can't feel a thing!! seriously!!!! i know exactly how you feel, but i am so glad i made myself go because i got the test results back and they were negative and now i know not to be so scared next time. no your mum cant actually make you do it, but the only reason she wants you too is cos she cares about you. trust me.....it is fine. that is my biggest fear in life...needles, but it was no where near as bad as i remember. and i promise you if you follow everything i said you will be fine too! just pick the day yourself though! some days i woke up feeling way too scared, so i didn't go, and then i woke up feeling brave and thinking just get it over and done with already! do it though! :o)

Ah yes, the evil needle. My daughter races around the room like a squirrel when she has to have one. May I suggest you have a good work-out prior to going to the Dr. so that you do not have a lot of energy left. Then when you get there practice some deep breathing exercises, in through the nose, out through the mouth to the count of ten. When the needle is close by start puffing, that's when you take a deep breathe and push it out through your mouth in short, fast, little puffs - like you are blowing out a candle. This is a breathing technique used in child birth, it helps reduce the pain, also you'll be concentrating on getting the breathing right and not be so focused on the needle.
Good luck.

It depends on the type of test whether it hurts or not. Anemia tests don't hurt that much. Its really fast just in and out. Try squeezing your eyes shut. The only part when it hurts alot is when they squeeze the wound, after all it is the IV vein that they get into. Everyone is scared of needles. You have to make your arm feel limp so that it is relaxed. It hurts more if the skin is tense and hard to brake into.
GOOD LUCK !!!

There is nothing to fear from needles. Most people who take blood these days are so skilled that it is painless. I just relax and look the other way. It is almost always over before I know I have been stuck.

When i take shots i look away and start to think of a good song before they put it in and don't think about the needle. After they put it in, it dosen't feel as bad. Trust me, when i had an I.V it worked. Those needles r like 4 inches long... although they numbed me...

Right when the needle is about to penetrate the skin, take a deep breath. It will help you relax. It works for me. Also turn away from the needle afterwards so you don't have to see it puncture the skin.

I know you must be somewhat frightened, but a blood test isn't very painful at all...no more so than a sharp "pinch" would be. Ask your physician if it's possible to put a topical anesthetic on the area to numb it a bit too. Honestly, it's really an easy procedure.
