The best way to reduce the discomfort of sore throat is to take pain meds like Tylenol or Advil (acetominofen or Ibuprofen).
Warm beverages and soups are also soothing to the throat.
Gargling with warm salt water is effective at soothing and also for helping to reduce the viral infection. Good oral hygiene when you are sick is also good -- brushing your teeth and using antiseptic mouthwash (like Listerine brand) are helpful to reduce the level of viruses in your mouth.
There are also tons of products such as throat lozenges and throat sprays that are soothing. For lozenges, I have found that the most effective active ingredient is:
hexylresorcinol
But there are not very many products that have it. Instead you will probably be able to find products containing other active ingredients.
The brand Cepacol is generally the most effective lozenges available (in the USA). Here is their website:

Treatments:
See a doctor if your sore throat lasts longer than 5 days.
Drinking a lot of fluids will help you get rid of a sore throat.
Installing a humidifier in your room will help you get rid of a sore throat.
Gargling warm salt water can help relieve a sore throat.
Acetaminophen (Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Excedrin) is the only pain medication you should be taking if you have a sore throat.

If it has just started hurting, first try brushing your teeth thoroughly (flossing and mouthwash included) since the bacteria in your mouth can add to the irritation, and then take any lozenge with oral anesthetic. Cover your throat with a scarf or similar to keep the area warm and take aspirin or some sort of pain releiver that suits you. Drink lots of fluid, warm tea and honey is the best in these cases.
If the sore throat is severe, lasts longer than a couple of days, you have fever, swelling etc... CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR!

Do you like the spice and flavour of ginger root?
If so, what works for me is to buy fresh ginger root cut about an inch off (cut off any yucky dry or brown spot) you could peel the skin off with a spoon if you like... I don't.
Take the inch piece and slice it into relatively thin coin pieces and place into a small saucepan that has about 3 cups of fresh water in it.
Bring this to a boil over med-high heat.... turn down to a simmer and let it cook for about 5 minutes.
Pour the liquid into a mug... you have GINGER TEA!....Save the ginger pieces you can use them again in a few hours or the next day they really hold onto their spice!
Sweeten the ginger tea with honey or brown sugar and add fresh lemon for some extra help.
Sip it slowly so it sorta coats the inside of your throat.
When I drink it I imagine the spice is killing all the germs that are making me unwell.
It's not an immediate fix but I find it works after 2 days.
Other than that or instead of try the Chlorseptic(spell?) strips... it'll numb your throat.

You can gargle with warm salt water and use sore throat drops. Pectin drops are good. If your throat is very red and has been for a few days I would ask your doctor for a strep throat test.

ok it sounds really gross but it works really well. Take some dr.pepper or coke and put it in the microwave until it is hot but not boiling. Then squeeze lemon or lime juice into it.Then drink it. I like to use the lemon juice that comes in the lemon shapped things. But anyways i am a singer and this works wonders for me when my throat is sore!
I hope this helps!

Yeah, I know how you feel. My throat feels horrible now, too.
I took ginger tea with lemon, but I warn you--it burns!
Then squeeze limejuice with lots of honey.
Dont drink anything cold--only hot stuff like tea.
Dont talk too much--it'll stress your throat out.
Gargle with two parts salt, one part water.
Thats all I can suggest. It was really bad this morning but now I feel much better.
Get well soon!
