Just wondering what is normal? or the average?

My daughter is now 28 months old, and I really can't remember how many words she had at 19 months, but I do remember that she was well below average at around 12 months (to the point where we were starting to worry). However, as time went by she went from being behind the curve to ahead of the curve, and now I suspect she has a much larger vocabulary than average.

So, I wouldn't worry about number of words too much at this age. Even if your child is above or below average now, 12 months later it could be a completely different story.

I lost count. Once she started talking, she never stopped. You know the new commercial for the car where the girl is in the car seat, telling her dad a story as he's putting her in the car, and she just keeps talking, and talking, and talking, as he shuts the door and walks around to the driver's door, like he was sitting by her the whole time? That's my daughter. She just turned two. However, my niece, only 3 days younger, says about 10 words. I think the standard is "2 and 3 word sentences or phrases by age 2", but my daughter's doctor even said his toddler (a little younger than 2) barely talks, and he's not concerned. It's also true that some kids just don't want to talk that much. Then when they do decide to talk, you'd be surprised at how many words they actually know, but just haven't said.

hi not sure where your from but here in australia when our babies are born we get a child health record book that we take to our maternal and child health nurses. In the book it says a baby 18-21 months uses between 5-10 words and understands many more.

I just looked in my daughter's scrapbook. When she was 18 months old, she said 55 words.

Every child is different. Usually, girls talk earlier than boys.
