I'm 26, and manage an apartment complex. One of my tenants is very behind on her rent because her wallet got stolen last month. She is a little younger me, single mom, living paycheck to paycheck. I was going to talk to her about it today but I could not bring fear and sadness to her during the holidays.
My family was a bit too generous with me this season. So I was going to covertly leave a card for her with some cash in it, and sign Santa Clause at the bottom instead of my name, and "Sorry I am late." I don't want anything from her, I just care, and would like to help out.
If you were in her shoes would you be creeped out or offended by this?

Also: I'm never going to tell her who the money came from.
How much is too much?

Personally as a single mother living paycheck to paycheck I would probably wonder who it came from but I would appreciate it at the same time and if you don't want her to know don't tell her she may say something to you about it and just say that she appreciates whoever did that for her. I am sure that she would appreciate it being that she is a single mom and everything I would do it if I was in your shoes and just think of it as a good deed.

I would appreiciate it if I were in her shoes. But, if i were you, I may leave something like a note telling her that someone had paid her rent. Or, leave a money order made payable to the complex. What if she did not use the money to pay the rent, that would probably upset me if I had taken such a step...
I hate to be the Scrooge who answers but I am trying to think of every angle.
Personally, I once had someone pay for a month of daycare for me. I never found out who it was but I got a call from the daycare director who told me it had been paid & the payer wanted to be anonymous. I cried when I found out, cried the whole way home & most of the night. It brings tears to my eyes thinking about it.
As far as an amount, maybe catch up her rent and pay next month as well. I am sure this will allow her to breathe easy for a while. Or, pay a month and give her a gift card to the grocery store or Walmart. Or to somewhere she can treat her kids-like Chuck E. Cheese, McDonalds, etc.

I think thats the spirit of giving and its not at all in any way offensive or creepy... i think thats above and beyond anything that youre required to do as her apartment manager. I think it will more than bring her to tears and bring her much joy and happiness. Some people just need a little bit of hope and support and that could be her prayers answered. I think its people like you in the world that make it a better place to live. I wish there were more people with the goodness that you have in your heart. Here at my place of employment we did the same thing for a lady that we work with... she was more than appreciative and thats all she talked about for like a month... she couldnt say enough about the "santa" that saved christmas for her and her children. I think that signing the card "santa" and "sorry i am late" will definately keep her hopes up and realize that there are people out there who care.... Merry Christmas!!

If you don't need a Santa, be a Santa. She will be truly blessed to have you.

No. Not really. Ok a little. just to be on the safe side tell her you love her and if she needs she should take it. She should understand if she honestly cares and feels you. Just be yourself. Tell her you don't mind.
GOOD LUCK
