Limewire and other P2P software is not illegal to use...It is what you use it for that may be illegal.
If you need to share data between PCs or want to share your own songs, poetry, stories, etc then that is your business and you are allowed to do this.
However, if you are making copyrighted material available such as music, videos, movies and TV shows, then you are violating laws in various countries and could be prosecuted if you are the one that made them available or also if you are the one who downloaded them.
People still do it (hence the popularity of these P2P products) but you have to just be aware that doing so is illegal and you do this at your own risk.
It's up to you if morally you feel it is okay to "steal" something by not actually paying for the right to watch, listen, or otherwise use that material.
For example, I used Limewire in the past to download new music, listen to see if I like it, then buy the album at the store once I know that I am not wasting money buying something I won't listen to. If I keep the mp3 without going to buy the music afterwards, that is just like stealing it, in my opinion.

This question is asked 50 million times a week but, It isnt lllegal to set up and run a file sharing site! What makes it illegal is the sender and receiver sharing copywritten material! If you read the contract on the site, they arent responsible for babysitting you and what you upload or download! Its YOU that is performing the illegal act and it is YOU who will be arrested!

Not sure how legal it is but it will fill your PC with spyware thats for sure. If I see limewire or Kazaa on a machine I know it is in need of a good cleaning.

The software isn't. Allowing others to copy songs from your computer, as well as copying songs from someone else's computor is a violation of copyright law.
