Which web sites you recommend to learn more about this breed? Any special care overall? We bought a litterbox at the petshop where we bought him, but we are still uncertain on how to teach him to potty train. The litter sand smells bad and everytime he lies on it, he smells awful too and requires a bath. By the way, how often do we have to bath him? He is our third puppy as long as we've been married...we couldn't handle the other two because they were too big for our small house. We would really want to keep this one now, especially since it was a Christmas gift for our daughters who wanted him so badly. He also has an umbelical hernia. I already did research that this is quite normal and does not need surgery. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Well as far as the name goes, I don't know. My mom has a Shih Tzu and his name is Sammy and I have one, and I named him Gemini. It all depends on what you like. The breed is Tibetan, and was bred to lay at the Chinese emperor's feet, if that helps point you in a direction. They are very happy and loyal dogs, and will follow you wherever you go, no matter what. If I walk across the room, my dog follows. As far as potty training goes, when I trained Gemini, I kept him in a kennel during the day while I was at work, and at night, and first thing in the morning, I took him outside and let him go to the bathroom. I would come home at lunch and do the same thing, and let him play a little. At night, I would take him out when I got home, let him eat, play, and take him out a couple more times depending on how many hours it was until bedtime. I always associated a word like 'potty' with going out so that now, I can ask him if he has to go potty and if he does, he perks up and runs to the back door. Fortunately for me, I now have a back yard, so it is easy just to let him out when he has to go, and let him get some time to run and play as well. I don't bathe him too often, usually, only when he starts to stink, but because I keep his hair cut, not long, he gets a bath when he gets groomed and the shampoo they use lasts for days. It is great stuff!!!!! The main thing with them, if you cut their hair, is to watch for mattes in between cuts once the hair grows. If you keep a collar on the dog, they will get mattes on the neck. Make sure to cut them out if you see them. They pull the hair around them and pull on the skin and can be painful. Then the dog can pull at them and hurt themselves because they are so painful. I hope that this helps you out a bit. Good luck with the naming! That's the hardest part!! The article on wikipedia says a lot about their temperment that is SO true. But they are awesome, loving, dogs. They are great with kids, and never cease to entertain.

Type in dog names in a search and lots of sites will come up with 1000's of names you can chose from. It is your dog so you should name it yourself.
As for learning about the breed you should have done so b/4 you bought the dog but since you did not just type in Shih Tzu and lots of sites will pop up with lots of info. akc.org has info on all registered breed of dogs with the standard and their description.
I can not answer the bathing question b/c I do not think dogs need to be bathed so frequently.
The umbilical hernia can be removed when you have him neutered.
Just teach the dog not to use it in the house you do not need to use a litter pan just because it is a small breed. You say you had 2 other dogs so I assume you know how to housebreak a dog.

We have two shih tzus, both from the same litter, and they are wonderful dogs, very gentle and good around people. I got info on them directly from the website for the American Kennel Club, plus they also have links to other sites. We thought about training them to use a litter box, but just trained them to go outside instead. Both of them will now come up to my wife or myself, put their heads on our knee and let out a little growl when they need to go. We were told that they only need to be bathed about 1x a month, however, if they need it, take baby wipes and give them a "dry bath" without giving them the full water bath. Too much bathing can dry their skin and remove necessary oils. Groom them when their hair gets too long, we still favor the "puppy cut" that most groomers do, getting the hair out of their faces while leaving it longer on the sides. Also, they tend to get their coats matted, especially on their bellies. We were told that to prevent this, make sure they are dry when coming in from the rain or snow, as they will tend to lay on the wet hair, causing the matting. Have fun with them, they are very playful and loving.

I just received a shi-tzu puppy for xmas from my husband. I named him "Kirby", and everyone thinks his name is adorable. He's 7 weeks old :) As far as "hyper", I tend to disagree. The breeder we bought Kirby from has 8 of her own. They were all EXTREMELY well behaved, sweet, kind dogs. Imagine a woman with 8 dogs and her house is spotless and white carpeting thru out, needless to say I was very impressed with the breed. I also have a 3 year old "Aussie" who adores him. If you have more questions I would be happy to help :) I hope your girls love their gift as much as I love mine!!!!!!

I only know that shi-tzu dogs are super cute but usually rambunctious and hyper. I was thinking that Spice would be a good name. I would try to train him on paper in the litter box and gradually move it outdoors..

Haha, it truly is humorous, because after I talked with reference to the question i became like "i visit claim Oreo! it truly is a lovable call"...and then I study the information and it became already there! I dunno, something taking section in off the black and white motif will be really lovable. Checkers, Panda, Cookies and Cream (somewhat lengthy! haha), Luna, football ball (ok, which will be type of unhappy), Tux (Tuxedo), Snoopy, yin yang. domino, Shamu, solid success!!

how about buddy or buck-shot....those are cool names and i think that when u take them to the groomers they get washed so get rid of the litter box and take him outside to go to the bathroom cause that is what dogs do, he isn't a cat so there is that so good luck.
