If for some reason you´re struggling to finish a bottle of wine, how long you can keep it for largely depends on the quality and style of the wine (so you may as well finish off your £2.99 bargain-basement bottles in one go!). It also depends on storage conditions, so it´s pretty impossible to generalize. I would however, recommend storing open wines in cool conditions for not much longer than 2 to 3 days.
However, I think that you can keep an unopened bottle for as long as you want.

Generally, wine capped with a metal cap will not have a long shelf life. Better wine is in a corked bottle. The reason is that it needs to breathe to stay fresh. Yes, keep it out of the light, and in a cool, dark place. Still, there's not a real guarantee. I had a friend who's mother bought a bottle of wine when he was born, and opened it on his 21st birthday. It was terrible....had turned to vinegar. You'll have a better chance with better wine in a corked bottle. As for how long it's good for, all I know are the basics I already mentioned, but don't know the number of months/years it will stay good. Actually, I'm hoping a real wine expert will anwer you, as I'd like to know, too. :)
Oh, yeah, I almost forgot.....it should be stored on its side (not standing up)

Wine can last a long time, years and years, Keep it cool, but more importantly keeep it out ofthe light. Thats why wine is in dark bottles in the first place, to keep the light away from it.

the only way to tell is to taste the wine. if it tastes like vinegar its been too long, make salad dressing out of it. if it tastes good, drink the rest of the bottle
