depends on who you're trying to avoid. but for the most part it would appear that most people appreciate being told. Even if it does hurt their feelings for a spell normally it is appreciated that you were adult enough to say what you mean and mean what you say. If someone didn't want anything to do with me I'd rather hear it from them instead of some hearsay she said he said crap. That way I wouldn't waste any time trying to get to the bottom of what's going on; whatever the issue you have with that kat is, address it head on, say what you have to say. Otherwise avoiding people is more hurtful, childish, and rude. Be an adult and do what you have do.

You mean like they are extremely clingy and you don't want to go to the mall with them?

If they call, just go:

Oh I am sorry, I already made plans for today.

Beware, they might call you earlier! If this happens, pick up and say, Really sorry, but we are visiting my aunt and won't be back for several hours.

Do not pick up the phone and when they leave a message, just think about the best possible excuse and call them back apologiziing and telling then that you cannot make it...

Just be honest with them, there is nothing worse then someone who is two faced and evasive. If you did not like the person, then maybe you should not have engaged with them in the first place.

Be brief with them and tell them how busy and hectic your life is at the moment and you can't make social plans.
