Women are definitely much, much better at driving... until they get onto the road.

If women were better drivers, the race drivers of the world would be predominantly women. But as you are aware this is not the case.

As for safe, it's a catch 22.

Woman are probably more cautious on the road which translates into less crashes.

However on the other hand, they can create unsafe situations for other drivers by driving too slow (under the speed limit) or taking forever to parrell park on a busy road because they are trying to be cautious.

One thing I have noticed about women drivers is their tendency to place both of their hands to one side of the wheel (10 or 2 o'clock position) when turning corners. This can cause delays if you had to suddenly swerve in the other direction because you would need to move one hand to the other side of the wheel first. Also, if the wheel slipped, there is no back up hand on the other side to catch the wheel.

Having said that, all this can apply to men as well.

Why do people keep asking this same question?!!?

Apart from the sex-pride groups out there we all know the answer to it, men are better at controlling a car, Women are better at knowing their limits and sticking within them. The most dangerous women are the incompetent ones that can be identified by their concentration on sticking to the rule-book over-riding their concentration on whats on the road, what is around them and what they are actually doing (i.e they will drive into a child before looking up from the highway code). And pink steering wheel covers are standard dress code!!

Bad male drivers can be identified by their inability to use the brake or even move the brick from the accelerator, and often by big loud exhausts on tiny cars that just look completly out of place!!

All other drivers are much of a muchness, the very best drivers are men, that's why you rarely ever see women in the racing circuit, a males brain is geared to knowing whats around him and where, and acting exactly appropriately (the hunter instinct), a woman is much more capable with multi-tasking (i.e a woman talking on a mobile phone while driving and doing her make-up is much less dangerous than a guy driving while reading the newspaper!!)

But the truth is were all pretty well the same, similarly capable and/or similarly incapable.

Problem solved!!!

Women as a whole are probably more legal drivers. They are involved in fewer accidents than men. But that doesn't mean they don't cause a few of those accidents. If you see a car in the left lane going precisely the same speed as the car to it's right, the driver (9 out of 10 times) will be a woman. If you see a car that's 100 yards from the car in front of it (in the city), the driver will typically be a woman (and usually on the phone).

When a man is a bad driver he is usually just trying to get from point A to point B in the quickest time. The best place to be is behind him.

When a woman is a bad driver it's because SHE REALLY DOES own the road. The best place to be is another city.

Studies have shown that women generally are better at multi-tasking and have a better safety record per 1000 miles travelled while men generally have better spatial awareness. Testosterone makes men more gutsy but can also turn them into macho idiots trying to be top dog amongst other men. IMHO a man generally equates being a good driver with being a fast driver - I've never heard a man boasting to his mates about how safe a driver he is or how he never breaks the speed limit. If one bloke says it takes 2 hours to get to X, another will say he's done it in 1.5 hrs.
(And I did see a car on the wrong side of the road turning right out of a junction just this morning - and it was a man).

Well as an advanced driver for the past 34 years, I have to say that women drivers that I have been with are more sensitive on the road, read the road better and are generally a lot safer to be a passenger with. Saying that there are exceptions and I have seen some awful women drivers, but in relation to men on the road, very few. So to answer your question, yes, I do think that women are safer on the road.

And a great question!

Women are safer drivers, but men are better at judging gaps, parking, overtaking, road positioning, reading the road, and they don't drive while talking on a mobile half as much as women do.

You can use statistics to prove absolutely anything you want. For example drivers of yellow cars have 10 times less accidents than drivers of black cars (what they forget to tell you is there are 10 times as many black cars as yellow).

Women tend to have more slower speed, dimensional misjudgement accidents that result in less damage to a vehicle. Men tend to have bigger bangs and more write offs. Women tend to be less agressive than men (although that is changing). Men are able to judge gaps a little better but women will be able to change the radio without changing lane. Men tend to be more aware of what is around them where women will be more aware of who is around them.

There are great women drivers and lousy men drivers and vice versa. We all have good and bad days behind the wheel and accidents happen all the time. Sometimes it is driver error sometimes it is mechanical and beyond the drivers control.

What we all need to remember is regardless of our gender we are all trusted to control a heavy lump of metal travelling at speed. If we can't do that safely perhaps we shouldn't be driving.

In my family, the men are safer drivers. Actually, there's just my wife and I. But I am a safer driver. No tickets, no wrecks. My wife has a ticket and a wreck.

I have only ever been in Two motorcycle accidents, both times I have been knocked of, at low speed, by women driving cars.

Both times they said they didn't see me.

Both times I was not to blame.

Both times they started crying and asked me not to get the police involved.

Both times when the police turned up, they sweet talked the coppers and went away without prosecution.

Statistics are based on those sort of 'sweet talkers'.

So statisticly, ALL those blokes out there couldn't hit me - they're obviously not as good as the women.
