Wollongong is the third largest city in the state of New South Wales, Australia, after Sydney and Newcastle. It is also a Local Government Area administered by the Wollongong City Council. It is located on the eastern coast of Australia, 82 kilometres (52 mi) south of Sydney in an area known as the Illawarra and has a metropolitan population of 274,072 (2004). Wollongong is connected to Sydney through a scenic road and rail route which takes between 90 and 120 minutes and via main roads, taking between 70 and 90 minutes.
The name Wollongong, (IPA: [‘wʊlɒŋgɒŋ]), is generally said to mean "sound of the sea" in the local Aboriginal language, although other explanations have been offered, such as "great feast of fish".[1]
Known affectionately as "the Gong", Wollongong is a town with a long history of mining and industry, having coal mines, steelworks and an industrial port. The city is also a regional centre for the South Coast fishing industry. It has a university, the University of Wollongong, which attracts a great number of international students each year. It has two Regional Cathedrals, and numerous churches of many denominations including the well-known land-mark, the Nan Tien Buddhist Temple, the largest in the Southern hemisphere.

i grew up in wollongong from the age of 9 to 20. while there are good things, the city is known up and down the east coast of australia as a city of druggies full of violence and corruption. i know from personal experience the police are racist and corrupt. and dont forget they carry semi automatic hand guns as regular pc's, no just armed units the whole force is armed. which means the criminals are armed. we have only had a couple but we have had drive by shootings in the centre if town. muggings are very high, walking from pub to pub is a risky buisness at night. it takes an hour and a half on the train to sydney central (approx 130km)
but the suburbs of sydney extend north and south. i hate to say it but i could never recommend to anyone wollongong as a safe happy place to live.
also i have NEVER made it to sydney from wollongong on the train in less than 1.5hours - and driving, 1.5 to 2 hours depends how close to central sydney you want to go. maybe 1 and a quater hours if you break the speed limit ALL the way

There's also Newcastle, a bigger city but a little further from Sydney. If you worked in Newcastle CBD you could go surfing during your lunchbreak. The Central Coast (between Sydney and Newcastle) is also a possibility. I grew up in Woy Woy and it fits your description pretty well.
Also consider Perth.

However, I don't know much about it, so I googled it and come up with this link

Have a browse and see if there is anything there that helps you out.
Cheers.
