I plan on buying a dSLR this holiday season, and I've narrowed down my choices to the Canon Digital Rebel XT and the Nikon D50 based on price and availability. Which should I get? Are there any better choices I should consider under $700?

Good answer, teef!
I second that, go to the store and pick the one that feels good to hold.
I am a Nikon user, but either one will do a great job for you, so choose and enjoy!
The Nikon "kit" lens may be just a hair better than Canon's, but both companies make many fine lenses to pick from once you outgrow the starter lens.

Nope you are right on the money, well done your research was good!

Personally I am from the Nikon Camp, I own a D50 and a D80. I will stress however that I am not here to rubbish Canon, they are excellent cameras.

Which EOS are you considering? 350 or 400? The 400 has more megapixels than the D50.

Your decision may well come down to which camera you prefer to hold. Are the hand grips right for you? Are the dials and buttons in the right place? Do you like the weight? Remember that the heavier camera may be less prone to blur from camera shake!

Go to a camera store and hold each camera and see which one you like better.

Pentax has just released some very resonably priced DSLR models for under $600.
I will admit that Nikon and Canon are the best players on the market but Pentax isn't bad.
