I mean we have to work out butts off taking the order, getting drinks and delivering food, plus clean the dirty dishes off the tables when they are done eating and wash the dishes our self and they will leave you one dollar, how cheap is that?? what if they had to do all we do for 2.17 an hour and they act as if it is a big deal to leave more than a dollar. Talking about some cheap individuals in this world. Why is that??? Do you do this in all dine in resturants where you get good service and will run the waitress to death, and then leave a nasty mess for her to clean up. I think it is rude. We have families too, and a dollar just doesn't cut it.

it probably has to do with the cheap asses that come in there. I have to say though I want to give mad props to Waffle House. I dig the food, it is cheap so it allows me to tip much better because I'm not really made of money, but I had gone there for Christmas night and I have to say yes, you do work your asses off. I ordered a BLT and Chili combo with a pecan pie. And it was obviously packed tighter than a can of sardines, so I just observed how pell mell it got in there. I mean it was the only diggs open ya know, so after I got my meal I tipped well over 50%. It's a shame that people don't understand the BS all servers(24-7 or not) put up with. 24-7 joints must be tough I know I could never do it. I may be only one in contrast to many that tip well when I go to Waffle House, but a kat like that is out there huh? Some of those cheap *** bastards out there should try working the restaurant gig-might take that hoighty toity nose down a notch huh? But I feel your pain and for what it's worth I appreciate Waffle House. Plus you're the only place I can play some good tunes on the jukebox.

I have worked as a waitress most of my life. 23 years to be exact. I know what you mean. But, the older I get, the more I wonder how the employer's can get away with paying so little and relying on the public to pick up the rest of our pay. We should get paid minimum wage like anyone else and whatever tips we recieve is a bonus. I help out at my friends restaurant alot and it is so slow there that sometimes for the four and one half hour shift I work, I only make maybe 3 to 5 dollars in tips. So, I get 2.13 an hour plus the 3 to 5. Pays for my kids lunches the next day at school is all. Can't go anywhere else as I don't have a car to get there. They pick me up for theirs. But the part I don't like the most is, when they have young children and they totally have food all over the floor on the carpet. I mean, do they let their kids eat like that at home? My kids made a mess, but nothing like that! You actually have to get on your hands and knees and pick up chewed up food up! Or it will get smashed into the carpet. Then, you get the dollar. That's the jip. I have heard that in Canada, the waitress's are in demand. They get like 10 or more per hour as the customers do not tip. And the better you are the more you will make. Now that is how it should be here! Maybe we can get it started! Fat chance I know, but nice to think about! And don't worry about working at the Waffle house.....that is an o.k. place to work. Not to be mean, but some of these people have no idea what they are talking about. You could make money there. And I have not recieved bad service just at "Waffle Houses". It all just depends on the person. Another place to go is Vegas! The waitress's there make 6 figures a year! Honey, we are in the wrong place! LOL....Anyways, hope you have a better day as I personally know what you go through. Some days are tough. (But when people are not feeling like cooking and want to be waited on hand and foot, we'll be there!) Have a nice day!

Honestly, I usually tip more at Waffle House for several reasons: 1) the food is cheap; 2) the food is always good (and consistent in quality no matter what W.H. location you go to); and 3) no matter how busy they are, I always get good, fast service. Plus I look at it this way--I'm paying a lot less to eat at W.H. than I would somewhere else, so I usually tip well just because I actually have money left over after buying my meal!

Many people are just cheap and stand with the 15% rule. You eat somewhere for $100 and the tip would be $15. You eat at W.H. for $10, so the tip would be only $1.50. Many people don't realize that even though the food isn't expensive, you still have to work just as hard (harder, actually) than a waitress anywhere else.

Have you thought about getting a job at a nicer, more upscale restaurant where a dinner is $30 or $40? Or maybe a different W.H. location (in a busier area, one with more travelers/truck drivers who might tip better)?

Wow - 'raven' and 'Fritz' have hit this right on the head.
2.17 an hour? I didn't know that such a low wage was legal in the Western world.
This kind of exploitation would make front page news in many countries.
Tipping is heavily discouraged where I live, but the minimum wage is decent and no job is exempt from it.

Join a union. Find another job. Even better - do both.

I have worked in food service for 20 years and when I worked in a "Waffle House" I never made less than $3 on a tip unless they just came in for coffee. I guess if you are having to do your own dishes that might take too much time away from your tables and they might see that as poor service.

Oh my God! I just cannot believe that the pay is $2.17 an hour. That is so cheap of the employers to exploit you..which state is this?? I have never been to a Waffle House ever. I am sure you will be working hard.
I feel that you should request a raise or look for another job. Good luck.

What's wrong with working for a decent wage and not standing around begging for money? Maybe your waffle house could be a trend-setter, no tips, but good wages. That's how it is in New Zealand, and it's so much better than turning serving people into beggars. Yes, things are a few cents higher on the menu, but it's sure a better system!

You have an interesting attitude towards this. Tips are supposed to ensure prompt service- To Insure Prompt Service - but they are something given voluntarily, not something to which you are entitled.

a single customer should pay a dollar if the bill is 5 dollars or under....that's 20% and more than the usual 15%. What part of the country only pays $2.17 to its waitresses?
You should be looking for a better job.

I think a lot of people tip a certain percentage of their check. If they spend five dollars, then twenty percent of that is one dollar. I tip based on whether or not the person did a good job. That's what tips are for. You aren't required to tip.

Additional Comments: I used to be a waitress and know that it's hard work, so I usually leave a good tip unless the waiter/waitress is just awful. I'm just trying to show other people's point of view.

If the service is good I always leave a nice tip, especially if the waiter/waitress is polite/nice and checks on me. I almost never leave just a dollar or no tip at all unless the service is absolutely terrible.
