I had a friend who had a 13 yr old boxer mix who was really sick that had cancer and they didn't have money to put her down. Her dad took her out to the woods and shot her. He buried her there and he was really sad that he did it. But i hear people do it because they bite people or they won't stop peeing on the floor.

You've obviously seen Ol' Yeller recently...

It's illegal to shoot your dog, even if it's sick. It's called animal cruelty and you can be arrested for it.

For most states it is not legal. However there are times when shooting an animal is needed, but not in this case. They could have taken the dog to the humane society and they would have put it down. They also could have borrowed the money. The only time I can think it was ever deemed needed was for instance, our neighbors pit attacked their child and they shot it to keep it off of her. That was a human life or death matter. The child is now alright, but afraid of large dogs now. A person who shoots their dog just for peeing on the floor should never be allowed to have another pet of any kind ever again. These animals depend on us just like our children do and you wouldn't shoot a child for peeing on the floor.

I didnt think it is illegal, if you can put a cow down by shooting it then why cant you do the same to your best friend? How do you know that the shot they give at the vet doesnt hurt them on the inside? they cant talk, and though it seems cruel, if you know what you are doing and can do it in one shot then by all means, put the poor thing out of its misery. Now I dont believe in just shooting them, unless they are very sick and/or are very aggressive. You shouldnt just shot it for peeing on the floor though, thats just ridiculous

The legality of putting down your own animal can be different from place to place. For instance here it is illegal in the city, but is legal in the county & state.

Living in the country and having your dog badly hurt because of being hit by a car, what greater act of love could you perform than to end the dogs misery as quickly as possible.

If you live in a city, it becomes illegal not because of animal cruelty, it becomes illegal because of discharging a firearm within the city limits.

If an animal is sick and for some reason a vet can't do the deed, then I'd be ok with it if the animal is suffering. My horse was very sick and suffering, it took the vet hours to get there. When I called him and complained, he said he was taking care of "live" horses. I never used that a?" again.

There is a big difference between animal cruelty and ending a dogs suffering. I too live in a rural area and most people around here will put there own dog down if it is suffering. I never have but, my father did it to any livestock that was suffering. I think it needs to be judged on a case by case basis. I don't believe my father was being cruel. I watched him cry like a little boy when he had to put one of our dogs down.

It's not illegal, some would say it's animal cruelty but it's not if you think about it. My uncle lives in the country and has had to put a few animals down with that method. Just after it make sure you bury them fairly deep so nothing digs it up. I doubt your friend would want to see the results if something did dig his old boxer up. But as far as for stupid reasons there are better methods to discipline your dog than killing it.

Having grown up in the country, I've seen this happen many times. If the dog was elderly and sick, it was very common for farmers to take care of the deed themselves.

Things have changed though and it is considered animal cruelty these days.

people who do it out of meaniess or stupidity need to never have a pet. if i knew a person or family that was abusing or do something that insane i would turn them in to athorities. there are more laws all the time now in some states for the animals.
look up the laws for abuse on animals in your state. if you can find it ask some vet or some athority who would know.
