He'll bring me a hair tie and hold it in his mouth until I ttake it. I toss it and he fetchs! It is soooo cute but I want ot know if it is normal. Is he mentally challenged or does he think he's a dog. I don't want it to stop unless it's bad for him in some odd way(I hope not).

It's certainly not bad for him.

I had never seen this, but I have a cat now who does this. We first noticed it while staying with our friends (who had him before we did). He would bring out one of their daughter's wadded up socks and she would throw it to get him to leave her alone, and he would bring it back. His favorites are wadded up (children's) socks or bottle caps (those clear ones from water bottles --he loves the beveled Powerade ones). He plays fetch, begs for table scraps, and until we got the fountain and implemented the lids-down policy, would even drink from the toilet. We in fact called him Cat Dog.

That's unusual for a cat--but not unheard of. And not only does it not mean your cat is mentally challenged, it shows he's very smart.

Cats love to play games--just like people (and dogs) do. But the games cats play are usually a bit different. Chasing something you've thrown is actually typical cat behavior--what's unusual is that your cat has figured out that he can bring the bal back to you and you will throw it again for him. Cats are smart enough to figure this out--I suspect they also realize that if they don't fetch it, you'll go get it for them!

Sure it's normal! A lot of cats I know fetch. Some breeds are more 'prone' to fetch as well, due to nature. Just like golden retrivers and labs are more likly to fetch a tennis ball then a chihuahua or pug.
One kind of cat I know that fetches a lot is an ocicat. They are decendens from the ocilot wild cat family. maybe your cat is an ocicat???

Totally normal. I've had more than a few cats that like to fetch things and bring it back. It's great exercise and anything that keeps my cats from scratching on the furniture is always a bonus!

I also had a cat that fetched. I think it means you have the pleasure of having an extremely interactive, playful, intelligent cat.

I've heard that particular breeds like to fetch, like Maine Coons. Not saying that yours is one or has that blood, because I don't know, but just thought I'd throw that in there.

Completely normal and completely adorable. Every male cat I have ever had has played fetch with various things - hair ties are always a big hit - but the females never really did. Must be a male cat thing. =)

My cat loves nothing more than a game of fetch with a plastic bottle cap. It is adorable. But once it starts, it doesn't stop until she is good and ready for the game to be over....which in the morning when I am trying to get ready for work is kind of a pain in the neck.

It's not normal - it's super normal. I knew a cat that liked to play fetch and thought him to be clever and fun loving. Your cat is initiating it, too - that's so cool.

I know dogs that have not learned how to play fetch - your lucky.

No actually its perfectly normal. I have a cat and she does the same too. Cats are never mentally challenged. He can also be doing that to get more attention from you or a family member or is doing that to just have fun. I think your cat is perfectly fine and is just having fun!
