I live out in the country near a busy country road... In the past yr alone I had five of my pet cats hit by a car. When missing I instintively go to a spot on the raod where 9 out of 10 they will be...but only as an incorpoararted part of the road. Am I doing something wrong? It happens mostly at night. Any suggestions?

The best advice would be to keep the cat indoors at all times, at the least, make sure they are in at night. I have two cats that still go outside but are not allowed outside after sundown. You may also want to make sure they have reflective collars on with reflectors, not just bright colors, on the band and the possibly a reflective id tag for added protection. If you are not able to take the cats inside, I would not advise getting any more cats. With the number of cats you have lost so far, it is not fair to continue to get new cats just to have them hit by cars.

I think your statistics are off. You've only had five pet cats kit by a car yet you said 9 out of 10 of them were in the same place.....

But if I were you, I'd definitely start bringing my cats inside at night so they do not wander and are not hit by any drivers who might not see them.

You've got to be kidding, right?
This looks like a grade school problem.

If you have 5 cats, live near a busy road and let them out at night, how many cats will you have left?

Anyone care to do the math?

Maybe you should keep your cats inside. And train them to know that cars are bad

Keep your cats inside!!!!! That's the easiest way to keep them safe. Outdoors is too dangerous for curious cats.

Better inside and fat than outside and flat!

Cats are nocturnal and like to roam around hunting mice and such. You have to make the choice to allow them to roam or keep them inside and live with the litter box smell in your house.
