I'm going to move to go to South America for about 6 months starting in late January. I am hoping to work as well as improve my Spanish language skills (so Brazil is out)...I'm wondering if anyone can tell me where in S. America has the combination of cheap cost of living, as well as decent quality of life...I'm thinking of Santiago, Lima, Buenos Aires, or Quito. Any suggestions?

I did the same thing exactly a year ago. Chile is very expensive, because it has the best economy in South America. You can expect to pay prices that are on par with those in the US. It has great people, though. Quito is nice, but it is just a large city. Ecuador would be second of my list of where you should go based on those constraints. Lima is absolutely horrible, huge and messy. Avoid it at all costs. Argentina, for me, had the best mix of low cost and high quality of living. I really liked Mendoza a lot, it was probably my favorite city in South America, though I didn't travel to Buenos Aires. The peso crashed about four years ago, so prices are dirt cheap everywhere. The people are beautiful and nice, and the Spanish sounds great. The food is wonderful. You pay five bucks for a fillet the size of your hand. Go there. You can always leave and go elsewhere with no problem.

Mendoza, In Argentina is a great option, it is also close to Chile. Just be careful with the conjugation of verbs in Argentina, they use their own system which differs from other countries. e.g.: Argentina: "decíme que hora es"; most spanish speaking countries: "dime que hora es"

chile is expensive. argentina might be a better option because their economy crashed about five years ago and they are still trying to pick themselves back up, so things are cheaper there.
