You found a really great article! As a vet tech for seven years in clinical and emergency medicine I have seen lots of chocolate eating pets (the day after easter and halloween are big days for this problem). I have seen varied reactions depending on the type of chocolate (bakers chocolate is far more toxic), size of the dog and amount ingested. Prompt treatment is important.

Not my dog butmy sisters dog. She figured out how to open her kennel while they were out trick or treating and my sister had a bowl full of Reese Cups for the kids when she got home to hand out. When she walked in, the floor was covered in liquid poo and vomit and her dog was completely lethargic. She spent 5 days in the vet hospital with no promise of her pulling through. She's fine now but my sister learned a very hard lesson. Keep the chocolate up!!

My dog has eaten chocolate by accident when he was a puppy. He's a Pekepoo. He ate a whole box of Nutty Bars once and got into a box of chocolates and ate most of them. He just ended up getting diarrhea and throwing up. He's fine now as an adult dog.

My mother's dog was a HUGE chocolate freak.lol It was a 6 lb chihuahua.I was always affraid that my mom would OD that dog on chocolate....for 15 years that dog got more velvety goodys than most people.lol consuming entire candy bars in one sitting.It never got her though.Eventually the dog just died of old age.
Maybe it had an imunity...who knows. lol I NEVER give my own dog chocolate, im too affraid.But i know people who do.I have a friend that has a "chocolate theif" dog...lol.He ate her kid's christmas candy last year and never got sick.And that was ALLOT of chocolate.lol He will still chocolate ant chance he gets.
But, i woudn't suggest anyone else giving it to their dogs.Thats a scarey thought...chocolate being deadly for a dog.

My dog once broke in and at all our easter chocolates (before easter so we didn't get any!) Nothing happened to him. However, easter chocolates like eggs and bunnies don't' have much mass to them, so I'm guessing that could have contributed to it having no effect. I wouldn't risk feeding chocolate to dogs, just to be on the safe side. By the way it's bad for birds as well!

Dogs are allergic to the caffiene in chocolate not the chocolate itself. It depends on the kind (milk, white, dark, or baking) for the potency to harm the dog and the dogs weight.

from what i have read, it takes about a full pound of chocolate for every 20 lbs of dog. So if you have a 100lb dog, it would take 5lbs of chocolate to kill it. So if you have this much chocolate around, you will probably be dead before the dog is.

My lab ate an entire bowl of Haloween candy last year, wrapper and all. He had diarhea for a few days and I had him xray'd 2 weeks later to make sure all the wrappers made it through.
He's still kicking at 12 1/2!!!

We had a puppy die from eating chocolate. The bigger the dog the less likely it well hurt them

yah my dog ate about 20 chocolate chip cookies...she didn't get sick or anything, but she was up almost the whole night and was really thirsty. and my old dog used to eat chocolate ice cream and nothign happened to him either.
