If your actual finger is not in pain, it should be okay. If your entire nail is purple it will take a few months but your nail will most likely fall off and grow back again. If just a bit of your nail is purple, it will probebly grow out and eventually heal. Either way, it'll take some time for it to heal. You have bruised the skin under your nail and probebly the nail itself.

I had a friend who did the same thing and it took over 3 months (maybe longer, I don't remember) for it to clear up.

Just be careful because I'm sure it's probebly tender.

It's not dead. The purpleness is blood untherneath the nail. If it feels ok and not too painfull, leave it as it is and it will grow out eventually. If it keeps throbbing, feels like there is a lot of pressure etc, you may want to go see your doctor. He will make a tiny hole in the nail so the pressure of the blood untherneath is released. Don't worry, it will all heal just fine.

It'll grow out. I have a half grown out one on my thumb. It does take a long time, though!
