You could always try Fruity Loops demo version. Other than that, I don't know. You won't get far in the music business with just free software.

The only thing I can think of that works is Sony's ACID (used to be Sonic Foundry's ACID, but Sony bought them out). And that's about $40.
If you have a Mac, you can always use GarageBand.
