I am moving from the Midwest to New York City, and I need to find a place to live. Are there any good resources (maps, helpful descriptions) or search/realtor sites that could help? All I need is a safe, reasonably priced apartment in order to work in the Financial district. No size limitations, etc. Thanks!

For reasonable prices and locations near the financial district (wall st. /downtown), check out some places in Brooklyn. You won't be disappointed:

Park Slope, Dumbo, Ft. Greene, Carroll Gardens. These are the more pricey neighborhoods of Brooklyn but offer many of the advantages of Manhattan at a lower cost.

The easiest way to find housing (online) is http://newyork.craigslist.org . Keep in mind that there is a lot of crap to sift through, although there will be a lot of crap to sift through no matter how you end up finding housing.

Keep in mind also that real estate in NYC is highly competitive and you will most likely end up having to pay 1st month, last month, security, and broker fee (1 month or 15% of the annual rent). Searching for "for rent by owner" will more than likely cut out the broker fee.

Room shares are your best bet if you want to avoid the hassles of paying a lot up front, or for a cheaper living arrangement overall. I've moved to NYC twice from california (back and forth), so I know what it's like!

Hope this helps! Good luck!

nytimes.com's real estate listings are the best place to start, as you can get a good feel for what is out there and what it is going for.

How reasonable is reasonably priced?

You might want to look in the Hell's Kitchen (aka Clinton on real estate listings), Downtown Brooklyn/DUMBO/Brooklyn Heights or South Williamsburg areas, or the Upper East Side as areas that aren't too far by subway and likely have rental apartments available for a not-too-unreasonable price.
