If you have been in the US Military you will know what I am talking about...
When you spot a Military guy out and about, perhaps it someone you know, and they are wearing Bates or Corafram style shoes as part of their civilian dress attire, do you think it is funny looking?
Do you think they ought to just leave them off and buy a real pair of dress shoes, or do you think they are being smart by using them like that when not in uniform?
BTW...I've been guilty of doing this myself a couple of times and having Military friends kid me about doing this.

Once again: I never said I hate the idea of wearing my Bates out in public with civvies, as I thought it was smart the several times I have done this...but still, it *could* be considered funny or even a bit tacky by others, and that is why I am posting this to check the reaction of other people.

Who really cares? As long as they like wearing their Bates then why should you care whether or not it looks funny or not. Its on them, not you. If they enjoy the feeling, great for them. Sometimes it just saves 70 - 80 $ a pair of dress shoes you're only gonna wear once!
Clothes means nothing, they could be wearing rags, and if they show themselves up in a respectful and diligent manner, who cares?

I bought a pair from Wal-mart for a last minute event. They looked very similar. I have worn them on a couple of occasions since then. They look ok with a brush polish, but spit shine would make the look too out of place. So, I would say the same for military guys, just to a brush shine not a spit shine.

My father used to buy surplus ones for us to wear with our dress clothes!
I know what you mean, however I don't see a damn thing wrong with it! People know a person in the military long before they look at his shoes!

I see no problem in it. I won't wear mine, I tell my hubby he looks retarded in his (not a dress up kind of guy- he is boots and nice jeans type guy) but his grandfather wears his every Sunday for church and any special occasion. And looks just fine. Shoes are a just accessory, it's all about who you are not what you wear.

I barely notice the shoes before I notice the hairstyle, the way they carry themselves, and the way they speak. They paid for the shoes, they can use them for doorstops for all I care.

I think it looks funny, but I'm not sure if anybody would notice if they were civilians.
