my husband is against santa b/c he feels he detracts from the real reason for the season...the birth of christ.
now, i feel that we can encompass everything into the holiday and it's all in how we raise our son. he's only 3 months so we still have some time to get the details ironed out.

i feel that we can take him to church and bake jesus a birthday cake and we can have santa come, but not idolize him.

is there anything you do to remind yourself and your family of the real reason for the season that we can adopt into our christmas traditions???

thanks!

Our son is 2 years old, so this year was the first that he will really remember. We told him the Christmas story and had a nativity scene as a table center piece, so he would know about Baby Jesus. Also Santa only brought him 3 gifts, like the wise men brought to Jesus. All of his other presents were opened on Christmas Eve and were from us. We also baked cupcakes in the shape of stars, put a candle in each and sang happy birthday to Jesus. He especially like that. Good luck with whatever you decide. It gets harder and harder every year to find the real reason for Christmas. God bless.

Well i guess since none of my family is under 18 we really don't have trouble knowing the real reason for Christmas. WE go to church Christmas eve and the little kids at church put on a play about the day Jesus was born then at the end of mass Santa Claus comes in the church and says a prayer in kneeling in front of baby Jesus and i think that's why a lot of the little kids i go to church with know the real meaning of Christmas. Then we go to church Christmas morning and then we just spend the rest of the day with each other.

Your husband is right. You should instill more of your beliefs in your children rather than a character that they eventually find out about and are disappointed with. It's truly a double edge sword. I grew up with mostly the Santa theory with little about Jesus. I then raised my kids the same way. It's not even who you teach them about, it's the presents that cloud the children's minds. That's all that my kids really cared about, and then when you spend thousands on them, they still give you that look of disappointment because you never get them everything. Even if you do, kids are still never satisfied. That is human nature. Well, at least in my experiences the older they get the less satisfied they are. So as a parent, I look forward to it all being over as soon as possible. If I could do it all over again, I would celebrate Christmas with one gift each and focus on the Lord. :)

i still celebrate xmas in a way but i focus more on it being a time for friends and family. rather than very specific christian beliefs that it symbolises.

as a pagan i celebrate yule rather than xmas but i still have a family get together as a few members of my family are christians

xmas is a time of birth, love and family.

i must admit xmas has become so materialist these days and it true meaning, whatever your beliefs has been forgoten.

i think you are right with your plans. attending church and santa are important. santa just reinforces the message of charity through giving gifts just like jesus was a gift from god.

We read the Christmas story out of the book of Luke in the bible. Also as the kids got older, our church has a Christmas play that the kids put on. That has helped, they have became actively involved in the story.
