the wife is on some kid of life support. so when he knows the lift is out he knows the the life support has stopped working as well hence the reason he knows she is dead

The wife was coming to give him the thing he forgot and in calling the lift, she was killed (no floor in the lift) he knew she was dead because because he heard her fall !! or was she falling down the stairs is that how he knew she was dead !!
