Sciatica Pain is actually caused by an inflammation/ irritation of the sciatica nerve where it exits the spinal column. The usual care for this includes anti inflammatory medications, pain control, and possibly a muscle relaxant to aid in sleeping (reduces muscle spasm when trying to achieve a position of comfort),
Also prescribed is a regimen of stretches for tendons and ligaments, and exercises to strengthen muscle groups affecting how the skeleton relates to the nerve. Usually the stretching affects the muscles/tendons of the lateral and posterior legs and buttocks. Usually the muscles of the lower abdomen and lower back are exercised and strengthened
I suppose that if the swimming stretches and strengthens the appropriate regions, then yes, swimming would be an aid to relieve the pain. You will probably need to get to the point in your recovery where you are beyond the pain response before swimming, as the kicking motion and its transfer into the back, might tend to prolong the nerve irritation.

Hi,
I found many interesting info about sciatica here: http://curesciatica.toptips.org
While looking for a miracle cure, it has to be understood that sciatica pain in itself is not a disease. It is actually a symptom or a group of symptoms with an underlying cause that needs to be targeted if some sort of permanent pain relief is what one is looking for. But one thing is absolutely clear. Incorporating a few exercises that have a beneficial effect on sciatica pain in daily regime is of great help and whether a patient is taking drugs or not, these exercises ensure that his muscles are kept in a toned condition that lessen any flare up of pain. Just a few stretching exercises can bring about a drastic change in the levels of pain and signify the importance of exercise in the management of sciatica pain.
Have a nice day

Do you know why you have sciatica? For that matter, are you sure that this is sciatica?
There is a deep muscle that goes across your backside called the pirirformis muscle. This muscle is in direct contact with the sciatic nerve, and if the muscle spasms at all, it irritates the nerve. The pain is similar, but it doesn't go down to you foot. (Been there, done that, frequently, including right now.)
First, find out what the actual problem is. Once that's been done, you can work with your health care team on finding ways to manage it. That might or might not include swimming.
