You don't really have to for just a card..
But if you would prefer to, Just thank then for thinking of you and keeping you in their prayrs.. Or just read and reply to the content of the card received .

No response is required for a sympathy card. If they sent flowers, you should, of course, acknowledge the gift but you don't have to go on at great length. Just a thank you card with a note that says something like: "Caring friends make all the difference at a time like this. Thank you for your kind thoughts."

I generally don't expect a response to a sympathy card. However the next time I see that person, I like to thank them for the card.

You really don't need to send a response for a sympathy card. Perhaps if you see the person you could acknowledge the fact that they sent a card (thanks for sending the card, I really appreciated you acknowledging my loss... etc). No further action is needed.

that depends on what exactly was written in the sympathy card...you could perhaps thank them and let them know how you feel

Actually a written response is not necessary, unless maybe a collection was taken up for you at work, or church, something like that, if so, thank them for their kindness at this difficult time.
