Others will claim China and maybe Russia, The only Competition, But remember Iraq had the World's 4th or Fifth largest Army before Operation Desert Storm, which was defeated due to U.S. Superior technology and Chain of Command in all of what 2 weeks? Numbers are not the most important factor due to the increase of technological warfare. This was illustrated in many battles since ancient times. Command and control and technology vanquishes a superior numbered force. Like: British airforce vs. luftwaffe in WWII, the British were outnumbered around 10 to 1, but because the British had radar installations the luftwaffe was desimated. Hands Down the USA is much better equipped, trained and commanded than any other fighting force in the world. Some will argue to debate that the Vietnam Conflict contradicts this, but they fail to see that at that time we had strict rules of engagement(it's tough to fight a war with one arm tied behind your back) and even then we had about 10-15 kills for every one of ours. Today is a completely different ballgame with much more superior technology compared to other nations that are still stuck at the best in the 70's or 80's.

It must be the United States. No other nation can match the non-nuclear firepower and ability to bring death and destruction upon enemy forces anywhere in the world. I would submit that the "largest" army (i.e., PRC) does not mean the "strongest." China certainly has the largest army, but they still struggle to project power. Being the "strongest" army does not mean much if you can't use that force somewhere outside of your borders. And if you do want to cross over to the nuclear side, Russia probably has more warheads and delivery systems, but I think they are really struggling to maintain their Strategic Rocket Forces at an effective operational level.

Understanding why others have made their choices, I would like to venture another logical list based upon recent actual, not just theoretical, military action. Sorry China, you have not done much lately.

1. The Israeli Defense Force is the best in the world. It has fought several major wars since its creation in 1947. The motivation of its troops and its well coordinated land/air actions are legendary. Its navy is untested and probably not as accomplished. Military activities are no doubt aided by a superb intelligence service.

2. The US is the only remaining superpower and has the best technology in the world. It has well coordinated air, ground and naval operations. US failures have all been related to involvement in civil/guerrilla wars. Has there ever been a war won by foreign troops against an indigenous guerrilla force?

3. The UK has had experience in police and standard war situations, including combined air/ground/naval conflicts. Aside from the US, (and maybe Russia - maybe) the UK has the strongest submarine force in the world with nuclear deterrence as one of its primary missions.

on a slightly more serious note its probably China as the have loads of men but then again loads of men would be easier to kill with a few stratigically placed bombs which brings me back to the british army. Lacks the men power of china and USA, the weapons of USA and the technology of the USA but are trained a million times better, dont shoot our allies and are better fighting soldiers.

my top 3 would be

1. USA - Largest Navy and control of seas are highly important in all out war
2. Great Britain - Only USA would have chance of defeating our Navy and our air and land forces are amongst the highest quality. Land forces are the best trained in the world
3. Isreal - Its land forces like Britain are of the highest quality, concentraiting its forces on special forces type missions like Britain.

Both Britain and Isreal have a lot of experience in modern warfare with Isreal fighting Palestinian Terrorists and Britain the IRA. That is why the are so high

The United States has the strongest army and the best technology, now that said, China could serve us up on a Silver platter, if they so desired... and we would have to implement the draft, the US just needs to decide that it wants to win the wars..and not beat around the BUSH! IF we REALLY want to win we always do... when our heart ain't in it we don't...

The United States military is the strongest. What it lacks is a Truman to utilize it. Lots of "innocent" folks are gonna die if we ever get the nerve to WIN the war on terror.
