no = used,format the cell as date 3/14/1998,enter 12/27/2006,formula bar shows same,cell reads1/0/1900,reformat to number cell shows 0.00. this tell me the date mathematics has gone afoul but I don't know how to fix it.

The only other thing I can think of is that since you're using a Windows PC (Macs default to 1/1/1904, not 1900) you might have a virus that's causing a corruption within Excel.

Even without the cell formatted as Date, ie just with the default General format if you enter a date, not preceded by = as you have, then you should get a date. I experimented with the settings on my PC (Win XP & Office XP). The only way that I could get it to recognise the date that I entered as a number was if I went to Tools Menu then Options then the Transition Tab and ticked the Transition Formula Evaluation and Transition Formula Entry.

Format the cell for date values. To do this, select the cell in question by clicking on it. the outline of the cell should turn dark.

On the menu select then . On the Number tab, select and then select the date format you want to use.
