I have had BPD for 6 years now through a HORRIBLE relationship that I couldn't leave. Finally I got the courage to do it. There is a man in my life now that has loved me for 6 years and has told me for 6 years that he would take me in a heartbeat if I left my boyfriend. For 6 years this man has loved me, and after all this time I get the chance to finally be happy. This man is wonderful to me, tells me he is patient with me and he would even go thru therapy with me if I wanted. I feel like I am dreaming with this man, yet my only problem is I still have those problems with BPD and I told him I can't trust him yet, and he understands but I need to find a book that will help me deal and cope with these problems. I already go to therapy now but I would like further help outside of the doc's office. I already KNOW what BPD is, I need to know HOW to work with it and change my thinking.

Ask your therapist, he/she should have book suggestions.

I would suggest looking into DBT. It's a form of therapy designed for people with bpd and it's incredibly helpful. I spent so many years knowing something was wrong but not knowing quite what or how to fix it. DBT lays it all out. It teaches you the skills/tools you need to make real changes in your life. The program was developed by Marsha Lineham and the book is Skills Training Manual for Treating Borderline Personality Disorder. However, it is generally taught in a group setting - more like a classroom than typical group therapy - and is most effective when learned that way. It's a lot to wrap your head around and make sense of, but once it starts to click, it all falls into place.

For me it was such a relief, I finally had something solid to work with. It really did change my life...significantly more than the previous 20 years of therapy I had been through combined.

I would say ask your therepist. I'm happy for you that you've found this great guy! If you want to talk, I am going into psycology in the future, and I have a lot of mental disorders... not what you have, but bipolar/depression, ADD(attention deficit disorder), SAD (social anxiety disorder) and GAD (general anxiety disorder) And my boyfriend has been really wonderful through it all. I've had to change my ways of thinking and really work at it, so if you would like someone to talk to I think I might be able to help you a little bit! Good luck and hope to hear from you soon! My email address is blueyedblondej5@yahoo.com take care!

I personally think the best book out there for understanding and healing from BPD is Search for the Real Self by James Masterson.

I have seen it at Barnes and Noble as well as Borders.

There's an older book called "I Hate You, Don't Leave Me: Understanding the Borderline Personality" by Jerold J. Kreisman.
He's a psychiatrist who specializes in BPD. It's a pretty good book.
