My son is 5 and I had never noticed a 'birth mark' before. However over the summer I noticed one on his back just to the right of his spine. What is crazy is that it almost looks like a wing. Now that is not my question.

Here is my quesiton...is this common for 'birth marks' to just show up like that?

Just to clarify...

He is 5, no stickers, no drawings, nothing like that. I am sure it is a birth mark (of some kind). Is it possible it was there all this time and never noticed it? It is still there today (I noticed it over the summer).

take him to the doctor to be sure but my son had this happen at 2. Weirdly enough ( I just checked to make sure) identical to your sons. Low on the right of the spine and looks like a wing. He later got one on his arm too. They are pale brown. The doctor told me they are "caffe latte" spots. My son loves they are called this as I drink caffe latte LOL. They grow in number till teenage years then fade away. My son is 7 now and no more have appeared and the "wing" one has faded a fair bit. I have never heard of anyone Else's child having them (though apparently its common) let alone identical to my sons. Get it checked to be sure but until you get to the doc don't go worrying yourself

If you said your child was 6 months old or even 8 months old and you just noticed a birthmark then yes that is common. But on a 5 year old. NO. they don't just pop up.
It looks like a wing???
Could he have had a sticker on and got a tan and then the sticker came off???
-did someone draw on him
-is it just a skin discoloration
You should take a closer look at it.
Birth marks just don't pop up when your 5 years old.
Your sure it's not a bruise????
It could be a birth mark that you just never noticed. But NO, birth marks don't show up.

It's entirely possible, especially in someone so young. it's nothing to worry about, but be sure to have his birthmarks checked at his next doctor's appointment. Melanin, the pigment causing birthmarks, can increase with UV ray exposure. It's quite common for birthmarks to develop over the summer.

It is possible for birth marks to appear late in life, but it's not what I'd call common.

It would be a good idea to be safe and consult a doctor.

I would take him to a dermatologist, especially if you don't need a referral from your pediatrician.

It's not likely to be skin cancer caused by the sun at this age, but it could be some other odd thing. Better safe than sorry.

Good luck

I DID THE SAME WITH MY 17 MONTH OLD. I JUST NOTICED 2 WEEKS AGO SHE HAS A BIRTHMARK RIGHT ABOVE HER BUTT THAT I NEVER NOTICED OR DID NOT SHOW BEFORE. I THOUGHT IT WAS STRANGE BUT I HEAR IT CAN HAPPEN AS THEY GROW AND THE PIGMENTS IN THE SKIN CHANGE.
