I really like Mane 'N Tail by Straight Arrow. It took a horse breeder to convince me that it was good for people as well as for horses, but once I tried it I'll never go back!! It totally hydrates dry hair and the conditioner makes my hair feel softer than any other I've ever tried!!
It's pretty economical, you get a large bottle for about $6. It is usually at most drug stores and I've seen it at Target and Walmart.

Any of the NEW Herbal Essences shampoos and conditioners work great! They smell good and there are different kinds for different types of hair! They run around $3 each but are totally worth it!
If you are looking for hydration, Herbal Essences actually has a shampoo and conditioner that is meant for that, its called Hello Hydration and it comes in a blue bottle. Plus they can be found at any store!

if you are dead set on buying from a drugstore then buy anything but pantene, that will dry out your hair really bad. it is one of the worst ones on the market. trust me i know what im talking about. if you can afford it you can try to buy catwalk at a salon, its a cheaper brand about 12 dollars a bottle and it lasts a pretty long time. i use it and i love it. i use the oatmeal and honey shampoo and cond. or sometimes i use the fashionista ones. they keep your hair really well hydrated and they smell awesome! i know the HUGE bottles are like 18 or 20 but those would last you months upon months. itd be a good investment

I too am the typical "poor college student," and my favorite shampoo/conditioner is Dove Sheer Moisturizer. It makes my hair full all year, especially in the winter. It may be a dollar or two may expensive than other brands like suave, but it is dove so you do get what you pay for, and it's a name you can trust!

Pantene is a very good brand that is no more expensive than any other brand. You can use Pantene Restoring or Pantene with Amino Acids to restore your hair and keep it maintained in the winter.

frutis has good brands. also, if you hair really gets dry (trust me on this, a LOT of my non black friends have thanked me) head over to the ethnic side (a very small series of shelves with weird crap on it) and grab cream of nature shampoo, the red bottle. It's a joint conditioner and shampoo and it works wonders. You use very little of it per wash so it lasts forever, has great results and you don't nee to buy a conditioner. Tresame is also great and cheap. I personally use pert however, it works best for me but my hair is thick and kinky.

VO5 (pick something that goes with your hair-type) (ie: oily, normal,dry,etc.). Clairol Herbal Essence is also good.
