why is this important? if you are breeding for money, spay the dog. the history can help give you an idea,... if she's had litters prior, but otherwise, it's mother nature, she might have 1 she might have 6 (the most I have seen is 7 but 2 were still born). More importantly, did you consider having an xray done 3 days before she whelps so that you know how many to expect? that way you know if she's having troubles and can get her to a vet right away.

They can surprise you. They can have one to six. I don't know what determines how many pups a dog does have. I would think the size of the dog. BUT, I have seen a nine pound Maltese have six puppies and they all lived.
