Wassalaam, means and peace
We say it to the reply of As-salaamu'alaykum, which means 'May peace be upon you'. It's the Islaamic greeting, and the reply is, Wa'alaykum-musalaam, which means 'and may be upon you peace', which is 'and may peace be upon you too'.
Some people just say Was Salaam, which they shouldn't.
Because you should reply back how it was told, or better by adding, Warahmatullaah, which means 'And The Mercy of Allaah', so saying 'As-salaamu'alaykum Warahmatullaah' means, 'May peace be upon you and the Mercy of Allaah'
You can also add wabarakatuhu. Which is and the blessings.
As-salaamu'alaykum Warahmatullaah Wabara-Katuhu: May peace be upon you, and the mearcy of Allaah and the Blessings'
This is the same to Wa'alaykum musalaam.
We should either say and reply in this way:,
Saying the greeting:
As-salaamu'alaykum
As-salaamu'alaykum Warahmatullaah
As-salaamu'alaykum Warahmatullaah Wabara-Katuhu
Reply to greeting:
Wa'alaykum musalaam
Wa'alaykum musalaam Warahmatullaah
Wa'alaykum musalaam Warahmatullaah Wabara-Katuhu

nope you should not shorten the arab-language because if you ndo people wont enven understand a word you're saying wa'alaikum salaam means and upon you peace and it is a standard reply of salam wa alakum so dont shorten it it will be dis-respectfull if you do. so its not okay just stick to the full-version =)) happy to help and PEACE OUT!!!
