I tried the Atkins Diet for a few weeks (three I think) and lost twelve pounds right away. Then, I got off the diet and gained it back right away. I felt great on it but I got stressed out and pigged out. I think modifing the diet with more fish and less red meat is a healthier diet.
I am going to try it again for the new year but with more fish, turkey, and vegtables. I will probably have bacon but not everyday.
There is a lot of conflicting results from this diet. For the most part, I don't think it causes kidney or heart damage unless you already have kidney or heart problems.
Make sure you research the diet before you start it and good luck.

My father followed the Atkins diet religiously, for a little over a year, he lost a WHOPPIN 75 pounds. His goal was ultimately to loose an additional 20, but plateaued after the first 75. Regardless of the diet and his exercises regimen, he could not loose the additional 20 pounds. Frustrated, he consulted his doctor sought out a nutritionist, and began the Ultra 90 program and has already lost 15 pounds in the first 2 months.

I know it works - at first. I personally know 4 people who lost between 15-50 pounds doing the Atkins diet. Once they went off of the plan( which your are advised to do by Atkins) they gained back all of the weight plus a few pounds. The greatest long term risks is kidney damage. Your body is not meant to digest massive quantities of fats and meats without putting stress on your organs. I also have relatives and friends that have lost on Jennie Craig and Nutri System. The moment they quit ordering the foods the weight crept back on because they didn't learn any new eating/cooking habits from eating prepackaged foods. Good nutrition and exercise is the answer. Not very dramatic - but it works!

It really does work amazingly and takes out the trouble spots with no problem. I used the diet when I was modeling especially for fast and amazing results. Some researchers say it can cause kidney failure and heart problems. I suppose it is possible but I never stayed on it for along period of time. You should get his books it tells you the proper way to do it. It is not just straight carb elimination forever. Some people do get real sick on it so be careful and make dure you do it right and listen to your body. If you start to get severe head aches and feel overly week you need to get off it.

Its a temporary fix for me. I cant live forever without carbs. I lost about 15 pounds in a month and a half, and then I took a friend to the Olive Garden for her birthday. I swear after one meal of pasta and breadsticks half the weight came right back. Plus you dont get as many vitamins and nutrients as you need. I couldnt have fruit or some veggies, and i just felt weak all the time. It messed up my stomach too.

Health risks & benefits are up in the air depending on who is doing the reporting. I've known a lot of people whose cholesteral have been dramatically reduced.
Myself, I lost a lot of weight very fast, then continued to lose at a rate of 2 lbs per week, which is what doctors recommend. Done properly, you gradually build up your carb content by eating veggies, grains, fruits, etc. It can be done but it's VERY difficult. You have to be very structured and have the ability to resist 'cheating.' It's not for everybody.

The problem with the Atkins Diet is that the foods "most" people replace carbs with are high in fat and these people typically are not exercising enough. So you can expose yourself to heart disease later in life. And once you stop the diet you will gain weight again assuming you go back to your regular diet.
It is rumored that Dr. Atkins who created the diet had severe heart disease when he died.

It does work but the weight comes back. I have seen it in two people.
One of them has gone to lose 152 lbs and kept it off with an all natural product called Isagenix.
