Personally I think quick "screener" dates are good when meeting somebody for the first time. Nothing is worse than being stuck on a bad first date because you are only half way through the evening's plans. It's also less stressful. Plus if the screening part goes really well, there is still an option of extending it into a full date.

I always liked them (I'm married now). Their nice because they're more casual. They don't seem so date-ish, so the pressure isn't as high. Also, they are shorter, so if you're having a really bad time, it's over much sooner. Since coffee/drinks arrive right away, there isn't as much awkward silence (like if you're waiting for a meal). Plus, if you aren't the one paying, you don't have to worry as much about ordering something too expensive.

Before I met my husband, that's what ALL of my first dates were. The last thing that I wanted was to get trapped for an evening with someone who irritated me.

Screener dates are GREAT.

Those are nice. Its especially nice because its a relaxed atmosphere making it easy to be yourself. The ONLY con might be if its your very first date and you may be short on conversation starters leaving awkward moments.

I think they are a very good idea. Keeps you from spinning your wheels during a real date while you figure out how to get away if it is going poorly.
