We don't know how old he is, as he does not have any of his teeth. I've never heard of a cat getting all of his teeth removed at once, so why would someone possibly do this to him?

He's also declawed and neutered. Is it possible someone had all of his teeth removed so that he couldn't bite them? He's the sweetest and friendliest cat I've ever met - been home for an hour, and already curled up in bed with us.

More likely, someone didn't take care of him, so when he arrived at the rescue, he had to have his teeth pulled out. Good luck, I am not sure what special things you need to do for a toothless cat, but I would call your vet and ask some questions... Good luck!

Congratulations! You have obviously gotten a really sweet guy.
Some cats do have serious gum disease and it is best to remove all the teeth. Cats can easily eat canned food and that's probably better for a male cat anyway.

Natural Balance has a nice line of canned foods and I can get it at my local pet discount store. Wellness has a good line of canned food too. Both those foods use high quality meat and don't put a lot of unnecessary vegetables in their food. When I feed my cats Lick My Chops or Felidae canned food they eat the meat and leave the carrots, potatoes, etc. They are also good foods.

I doubt if all his teeth were removed to prevent biting. I can't imagine a veterinarian doing this.

It's possible that your cat lost all of his teeth through some kind of gum disease that wasn't treated. Cats and dogs can get gingivitis and other gum diseases. Some can get very sick by it. Just about everything that causes humans to lose teeth can cause an animal to lose teeth also. Poor nutrition, disease . . . etc. Then a vet may remove teeth for the health and welfare of the pet.

They could have had them removed but it's more likely that the cat had developed an infection or gum disease that led to his having to have the teeth removed. Congratulations on saving a loving, beautiful cat!!! You are giving an animal another chance at a good life and loving home, that's awesome!

Good for you!!
I've never heard of a vet pulling teeth to keep them from biting (although I know one who did file down the canine teeth on an aggressive cat under anesthesia). Some cats like people are predisposed to gum disease, it could be this or result of bad nutrition when he was young. Just feed a high quality canned food and enjoy your new friend.

Cat Years Human Years a million sixteen-18 2 21-25 3 29 4 33 5 37 6 40-one 7 40 5 8 40 9 9 fifty 3 10 fifty seven 11 sixty one 12 sixty 5 13 sixty 9 14 seventy 3 15 seventy seven sixteen 80 one 17 80 5 18 89 19 ninety 3 20 ninety seven 21 one hundred and one veterinarians are in many circumstances asked to evaluate the age of a cat in "cat years" to its equivalent in "human years." however this exercising has long been tried utilizing one formula or yet another, there is no scientifically good technique for changing the age of one species into the age of yet another. One piece of counsel nevertheless lacking for the final cat inhabitants is precise mortality counsel: At what age, and from what, do cats die? the main in many circumstances referred to motives of dying in elderly cats are kidney failure, maximum cancers and infectious affliction. yet this would not count form all of the greater youthful cats who die in vehicle injuries and for different motives. atmosphere particularly performs a function in existence expectancy. We do understand that the conventional lifespan of feral tomcats (that's, intact male cats who stay interior the wild) is amazingly short-approximately 3 years-on an identical time as the conventional lifespan of a neutered indoor puppy cat could make larger to the late toddlers or perhaps twenty years. by using fact feral cats are uncovered to infectious illnesses (probably with out the earnings of vaccination), autos, canines and different hazards, that's comprehensible that their conventional lifespan could be somewhat short. Genetics additionally has a function to play. mixed-breed cats have been reported to be hardier, and there may be some fact in this. Inbred cats, and cats bred interior a small gene pool, are greater probably to have inherited issues, and as a result won't stay as long, as a team. on the different hand, pedigreed cats from in charge breeders are heavily matched to avert genetic issues in breeding, on an identical time as mixed-breed cats tend to have been bred randomly. Genes additionally play a function interior the tendency to advance specific illnesses-or the luckier tendency to avert them. Given those caveats, is there a style of precise age conversion formula? The previous, old concept replaced into that one human 12 months is resembling seven cat years. yet a one-12 months-previous cat is greater bodily and behaviorally mature than a seven-12 months-previous toddler. So here "regulations of paw" are seen to be greater precise: the 1st 2 years of a cat's existence are style of resembling the 1st 25 years of human existence; thereafter, each calendar 12 months is style of resembling four feline years

My guy has lost teeth from an infection (he's 17, pretty common).
He's a happy guy, happier now actually, because he loves his canned food and only used to a get a little as a treat at night.

Most likely it was gingivities (sp?) or a gum disease. He'll have to eat wet food and dry food in the fod of kitty shakes. And he'll have to be an indoor guy too. Congrats on your new member. May there be lots of love and happiness.
