I personally don't like boston terriers because they jump all over me and scratch my arms and legs.and can never just lay in your lap and be still ya know....I'm thinking of getting a boxer but from what i've read I'm thinking they are like this too.. I want a inside dog who loves to cuddle and who doesn't shed. One who is loving but playful and protective.. Any suggestions?

I am a Boxer owner and have had several over the years, which all of them were kept until they passed on of old age. Mine is an inside dog and she does NOT jump on people but she loves the couch!! (that was my husband's idea of letting her up there) She loves to play and is VERY protective of me,which is why I have her. She LOVES children too. She gets along with the small mix breed dog we have as well, they are good play buddies. The only factor I have is that she does shed some, but if you keep her brushed it isn't much. Also,I just read a little while ago on a webpage that the food is a possibility of her shedding, which I did NOT know could cause it. My Boxer is now 8yrs old, still very playful she LOVES to cuddle and would sleep with me when my husband is not home if she could get by with it(he is a long haul truck driver so gone a lot of the time). I would recommend a Boxer to anyone,I have NEVER had a problem with one single Boxer in my entire lifetime and I am now 53 yrs old and counting. Also,Boxers are NOT small dogs, they get very large, but are cuddly and love affection. They are a perfect Family dog in my own opinion. Good luck.

Boxers can be high energy dogs, unfortunately who ever owned the boston terriers that you met did not train them well at all. Like any dog you can train your dog to jump and be "hyper". Boxers are great dogs, and can be great family pets, unfortunately with most short haired breeds they tend to shed a lot.

All dogs should be walked every day for a good amount of time but if you want a dog that doesn't need lots of room for boundless energy you may want to stay small and go with a toy breed. They may not make great guard dogs and be the protective bulk you may be looking for but I always found that small breed dogs are always more keen to anyone approaching their home.

Not every dog likes to cuddle, just do your research and maybe look up a few breeders, and when you find a particular breed you like tell the breeder you are looking for the lowest keyed dog in the bunch. And remember if you act hyper around your puppy you can influence him to be hyper as well.

Good luck!

Boxers are energtic dogs. I have one and they are puppies for life. However jumping has to do with the training a dog has received and not whether it is a hyper dog.
Is the boxer for you-

Oh boxers do shed. Try a shelter or visit breed rescues. Mutts are great mixes of everything. Some suggestions maybe the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Schnauzer, shih tzu, and the boston may still be a contender. Relize training is key if the dog is jumping not hyperactivity.

well playful and protective equals big dog who is hyper if not controlled right. A good beginner dog if you just want a companion is a greyhound. Retired racers rarely move lol. Boxers when handled correctly are playful and protective but can be destructive (they are goofy little monsters lol) They will jump on you if you can't handle them. Ok they will dominate you. If you can't handle a boston then a boxer (which is way bigger) may not be right for you. I'm sorry. Maybe a smooth collie or something of that nature?

I have a boston terrier/chihuahua mix. He is really hyper but also can spend long times alone and is fairly easy to care for. He makes us laugh a lot. He does weird things with his food and hops around like a deer. Not to mention he looks sort of like a cross between an alien and a bat. We really don't even have to take him for walks.. he could care less. He also is very fit. I assume it's the terrier in him. Ver muscular for a little guy who doesn't get out too much.

Boxers have A LOT of energy. And remember, each dog is unique. One may be crazy while his brother is a lover.

As far as jumping all over you and scratching your arms, this is due to bad training, not a bad breed. . .

As far as shedding, boxers shed like crazy. If this is problematic, a boxer would be a TERRIBLE choice

The best thing you can do is to contact a responsible boxer breeder or the boxer rescue group and tell them what you are looking for. They'll honestly tell you if it's realistic or not. Good luck to you.

Boxers are pretty active & tend to jump on people till they start to mellow & mature at about 3 years old. But then, most dogs are wound up till then! Maybe you should consider getting a 3 to 5 year old dog through a rescue - these loving dogs need a 2nd chance due to owners getting transfered, divorced, etc. Go to www.akc.org to find breed rescue organizations for Boxers, Boston Terriers & every other breed.

I don't recomend a boxer as an inside dog. One of my boxer memories that sticks in my mind is of one that used to come into the vet clinic I worked at and would litteraly run up the walls and do complete back flips. They are the most loving and affectionate dogs, and I think they are just gorgeous. But they are VERY hyper, and need alot of exercise and attention. Have you thought about a bulldog, they are less hyper, love to cuddle, and bark at strangers. Best of luck!

You may want a Yorkie--they are non-shedding dogs--and they love to cuddle.

Boxers shed. Boxers can be very hyper. My son brought one home. He left it in my house while he went to work. The dog tore down my curtains and mini blinds, knocked over and broke a lamp, shredded newspapers, had the couch cushions off the couch an d on the floor, etc. This all happened in an hour and a half before I arrived home.

The boxers that I've seen are all hyperactive wackos. they jump and scratch and everything. But I like those kind of dogs because i think their fun.
