The simple method is not to talk to them. I don't mean in a snotty, better-than-thou kind of way...I mean don't divulge any personal information. Don't tell any stories that you might be embarrassed about. Don't give any information about anyone else. Above all NEVER confirm or deny anything they ask you...Something as simple as "Do you think Jen dyes her hair?" can become "Alli said Jen was a bleach blond whore!" before the period is out!
If someone asks the aforementioned Jen's hair question, pretend to think for a second, and than answer with a wholly noncommittal "I dunno". You'd be surprised how few Gossip Whores actually are SEEKING more gossip, or even want to hear your voice. Most of them just want to pass along what they think, what they heard or what they really, really WANT to be true. So don't strain yourself. Just nod and smile and go about your business.
The more difficult method is called confrontation. Tell them you don't like talking about other people, and that you don't really feel the need to, since you're perfectly happy with YOUR self...and that you're sorry that they aren't nearly as secure in their own skins...this will of course lead to at least three rumors about you, one involving a goat and two involving your suspected parentage. Enjoy the notoriety. Make friends with the new and interesting people who will now feel comfortable talking to you, since you're no longer lumped in with the G.W.'s...remember that Gossip Whores unfortunately do not stop after school...you will have to deal with those sad little people forever. Learn to deal with them now, and learn who you truly are...a follower who'll hang out with them just to be a part of a group, or the trailblazer, who's willing to walk where others will follow.

Honey, just ignore it. As long as YOU know what is true, that is all that matters. Soon enough you'll be off to college and improving your life and they'll still be stuck as gossipy skanks.
This comes from a girl who was a major gossip topic, even though most of it was undeserved... I even had girls from other towns wanting to beat me up for sleeping with their boyfriends... I had never even MET their boyfriends. Just go with it, live your life as you choose, and move on. Remember that eventually EVERYONE gets their come-uppance.

Ignore them and worry about getting an education. Pay no heed to gossips as they are pathetic haters who don't have the stones to rise up to your level so they try to pull you down.

ignore it, if possible.
and remember, it doesn't stop in school.
It's rampant in the business world, too. Be a person of integrity - don't listen or participate. Stay far from it. People will begin to trust you - and believe me - they notice that you don't get into it.
Good luck. It is very hard, I know.
