im trying to use a dv camera with a firewire. I dont have the plug on my computer for a firewire and I thought it was USB. What plug do you use and can I get a converter where I can plug in the firewire and it converts to a USB?

you need a IEEE1394 PCI card so you can connect your dv camcorder to your computer. You can try to look in this site from ebay.
Firewire is used by Apple computers but its known as IEEE1394 internationally.
Firewires can be 6 0r 4 pins...hope it helps

a converter does not exist. you must buy a firewire card for your computer. it goes inside of your computer and will give you the correct connection. you can also buy a thing called Dazzle for about $50 in which you plug in the A/V cables into it and then the other end is a USB cable which connects to your computer. you can do it that way but its a lot slower and you will lose quality

You need to purchase a firewire card for your computer, like so:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=6307392&st=firewire+port&type=product&id=1074787927900

You can usually get them for $35 or less. After that, you'll need a 4pin to 6pin firewire cable, like so:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7304776&st=4+to+6+pin+firewire&type=product&id=1118842475694

Shop around, you should be able to get a better price on that 4 to 6 pin firewire cable than the one in the link.

Next, you'll need some sort of software to edit with. After all, what good is it to capture your footage, and not be able to cut it, add titles, transistions, and so forth. Non-Linear editing software programs also allow you to output the finished product however you want. There are many to chose from: Pinnacle studio, Ulead, Sony Vegas...so forth. You can usually get a good consumer editing program for around $50.

Good Luck,
