As a bigbore hunter myself I will start by telling you that 80% of the people you ask this will tell you that a 45-70 is not a deer gun at all, and you should buy a 270 or 243, 30.06 and so on.. 15% will say that it depends on what kind of deer your hunting. The remaining will tell you what Im going to tell you.

Both the 30/30 and the 45-70 have about the same effective range. The 45-70 has alot more knock down power but they are both good hitters. The only reason i would say no to your question is if you are hunting spotted fawns or key deer from florida. The 45-70 is an all around better caliber than the 30/30, and the gun to shoot it from is a Marlin Lever Action, not Winchester. Opinions may vary.

For the many who will tell you to buy the above listed calibers I will go on to say the only reason you would need a .270 or simular caliber would be to make a 150+ yard shot. Most of the time we go to the woods to hunt not the plains and this will not be an issue at all. I hunt with several differnt calibers, but my fav is the 450 Marlin, very sim to the 45-70 and it will do anything you need it to. When you shoot a deer and lets say your like 90% of the hunting population and you dont make a great shot with a 243 or 270. Your deer will leave a blood trail up to about 2 miles until it disappears and the deer lives to walk the woods laughing at you. That same shot with a 45-70 or the 450 marlin will send it to the ground where it will stay until you walk close enough to take care of it. I have made bad shots and so has everyone on this site who hunts, the problem is they would lead you to believe that they are prefect so that there answer is more respected.

As a final note, if you buy a 45-70 the gun you will have can hunt just about anything other than African Large Game. You will never need to have 8 rifles in the case, it just simply makes since. Good Luck and happy shooting.

The 45-70 is a more reliable stopper but the 30-30 is easier to shoot and will still do the job. You don't need a 45-70 for deer. More deer have been killed with a 30-30 than any other caliber, they've been at it for a lot longer than the modern rimless cartridges. Everyone has their favorites and will tell you to buy this that or the other. But up to a couple of hundred yards a 30-30 is every bit as good as a 308, 270, 25-06 or whatever other moderate round.

I'd quite like a 45-70, but I already have a 7mm Remington Mag, 303 British, 300 WSM, 357 Mag and a 308 Winchester pistol. Of those the 303 British is nearest to the 30-30 and is actually my favorite deer rifle. The 7mm or the 300 are a lot more powerful but they don't kill deer any faster or deader. They do cause more damage to the carcase.

If you aren't too bothered about the cost of ammo or the recoil then buy the 45-70, it's a total classic.

The people who vote for 243 are steering you astray, IMHO. I've probably killed more than a hundred deer with a 6mm Remington, which is just a hair faster with the same bullet, and I promise you it's a specialist's caliber. You don't say where you're hunting, and that will make a difference. In heavy woods, I use a 348 Winchester levergun, but there's nothing comparable available these days, and the 45-70 Marlin is about as close as you can get. But most people want something more versatile. If you're hunting from a stand, a full-sized bolt-action will be your choice. If you're going to be walking, the Remington 700 Mountain Rifle or one of its lightweight equivalents from another maker would be a definite consideration. And the caliber for general deer hunting can start a lot of arguments, but for deer, the 7mm08 is about ideal for almost any situation. It's pleasant to shoot, with modest recoil, has all the range you'd ever want, and the long bullets available will penetrate and do the job downrange every bit as well as the larger cartridges with more recoil. I have lots of rifles for deer-sized game, but when my father got up into his last years and couldn't take his old cannon into the deer woods with him, I didn't have to think hard. I got him the 700 Mountain in 7mm08 with a Leupold 2-7x (or was it a 3-9x?-it really doesn't matter) and he enjoyed several more years of successful hunting.

The .45-70 is a superier deer gun in that it does have more reach, terminal energy at a longer distance and shoots a wider slug than the .30-30 Winchester.

Better deer guns than both the .45-70 and .30-30 are:

.243 Winchester
.6mm Remington
.25-06 Remington
.270 Winchester
.308 Winchester
.30-06 Springfield

Then there are the 'magnums,' but any of the six above are good deer calibers. The last four are top-notch deer guns.

45-70 Vs 30-30

The 45-70 is a great round, and a very effective one, but it's way more than is necessary for deer hunting. Not to mention, it has substatially more recoil than the .30-30. Neither of them has a range advantage, or an accuracy one. The big advantage of the .45-70 comes in elk, moose, or bear hunting, where the larger, heavier round works beautifully against large, tough game.

If you are asking this question, you are probably a beginning whitetail hunter. The 45/70 has considerably more recoil than the 30-30. For that reason, a beginner will have better success with a 30-30. Hornady is also coming out with a new round that will function in their stout lever-guns that will duplicate the performace of the .308. Find someone who has these calibers and shoot them for yourself, then buy what you are comfortable shooting.

almost any thing is better than a turdy turdy, people say "they have killed more deer than...." the only reason that is because it has been around for a hundred some odd years, same thing goes for the'06 it turns 101 in few days, don't get me wrong, the '06 is a decent caliber,it won WW2 for the good guys, but there is better out to be had,i don't have much experience with the 45/70,but i do know it fires a very large heavy bullet at moderate velocity's,and has tons of kinetic energy, literally,i hunt deer with a 300 win mag, like the dude said above, some times you make a poor shot and the deer gets away,i have made a few poor shots with the 300 and they never get away, but to answer your question yes the 45/70 is better than a 30-30
