This also happened with one of my sons.I took him to the doctor because I suspected a hernia. It turned out to be normal. He's 6 now and it's gone back to being an 'inny' except for when he's eaten too much, then it pops back out again! There seems to be almost a prejudice against 'outies' Please don't hate on the 'outie'

There is something called an umbilical hernia, I don't know much about it. Here is some info:
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000987.htm
It could also just be inflammed because your son is poking at it. If it is swollen it may pop out.
However if you are worried, then get a second opinion. YOU know best if something is off with your child and your doctor works for YOU, not the other way around. Would you keep a gardener that refused to fertilize your roses, no! Don't keep a doctor that doesn't listen to you.

I will say that you may see a different doctor if you wish to...but that part is your opinion based upon your paranoidness (if thats a word)..
It seems to me that this would be normal because I have known this to be a situation to be many kids, Even Kids from ages 1-15 can go through these changes, if I were you i wouldnt worry about it.
:D

If it seems to be causing him discomfort I would seek a second opinion. I know that on adults that can signal a hernia. Keep an eye on it and if he seems in pain def. call for another opinion. Doctors do make mistakes.
