Great new procedure that your vet can do. It's called spay/neuter.

spay and neuter your pets now. Frankly if they can't figure it out on their own they don't deserve to breed.
Maybe you could go down to your local animal shelter and watch them put puppies to sleep all day. Perhaps then you would see that breeding more dogs is a bad idea. Especially when you know nothing about it in the first place. Have your dogs been tested for genetic conditions? Do you even know of the issues that can be inherited in shitzus?
We don't need any more home grown breeders, there are far too many dogs dying every day and rescues are full of shitzus.

You should be doing research first. Why are you wanting to breed them? What have they titled in- conformation or anything else? Are you a backyard breeder?

What genetic tests have you done?
The link below is to the Shih Tzu club of America and the page is on breeder guidelines. If you can not follow this you should not be breeding.

If you are coming here for answers I feel it is an indictor that it is time to spay and neuter. Do some research! Backyard breeders are the number one cause of the 5million animals a year.

Have you have a vet check done on the female to make sure she is developed enough to have babies! You never want to breed a dog to early. I use to breed large breed dogs and Never until they where at least 3 and after they had been approved by the vet for health and maturity. If you breed to soon and the female is not mature enough you are asking for problems and possibility's of unhealthy puppy's or a mother that is not mature enough to care for them properly

First off, how close are your dogs to breed standard? Do you have papers (AKC or UKC)? Do you have a 3 generation (or 5 generation) pedigree. Are your dogs sound? No defects? Have they been x-ray(ed) for bone defects? Are you breeding for money?

Breeding dogs IS NOT a business! If you plan on making BIG BUCKS, then get your dogs spayed/neutered before it is to late! You will barley break even on breeding dogs if it is done right. Do you have homes for the puppies yet? Have you interviewed the prospective owners? Do they have the finances/resources to care for this puppy for 10-18 yrs? Are you willing to take an unwanted puppy back and care for it? Are you willing to guarantee your puppy against birth defects for two yrs?

Now if you still wish to breed your dogs, then you can take your dogs to the vet and have the vet do it by invetro(sp) fertilization. If you don't want to spend the money, then when she is in standing heat, put him in the mounting possision, and you litteraly get down there and do the job yourself. By this I mean put "his" in "hers" and get the motion going. You have to get enough of him in her for them to tie.

Sounds gross? Then get your dogs fixed...you don't need to breed.

Karen T: ARE YOU NUTS? I hope I am not the only one to speak up on your answer. An unspayed female has a greater risk to get cancer! How cruel is that to let your dog get and die from cancer? Have you ever witnessed someone die from cancer? I have! What a horrible way to go! My "adoptive" grandfather (lost my real one to a heart attach) died from cancer. Morphine would not even dull his pain! There are too many unwanted dogs and cats in the world already. Dogs/cats only do what is natural. They breed because it is survival of the species...dogs are not going to die out...ck out your local shelter! Humans (and a few other animals) mate for pleasure. I quit breeding because it got harder to place my puppies in good homes because of all the people breeding their dogs!

By the way...I am fixed!

My suggestion is to get both dogs altered. Asking these types of questions just shows you really haven't done your homework.

Here's a great website with several articles that might help you with your decision to breed, if that's the direction you decide to take. There's a lot more to it then getting two "purebred" dogs and letting nature take it's course.

I'm sorry I don't think anybody should be rude to you but please go down to the local animal shelter and tell me you want to watch them die. You'll be putting them out of a potential home. Please you have an internet connection just look at the top ten reasons to spay and neuter. Or the top ten excuses not to. 1 female unspayed in seven year can have a family tree that extends to around 67,000 puppies. 2 billion dollars in tax payer money is spent eauthinizing dogs and cat's. Just go down to the animal shelter. Think about the reprocutions. Please.

I have to agree with everyone on this question. You don't know enough about breeding, leave it to the professionals and get your dogs fixed.

DO NOT BREED.
Getting your dogs to mate is the least of your freaking problems.
Considering that you know so very little about breeding, you could be putting your pets in danger.

Here is what you do: Go to the vet and say " I need my dogs to get fixed". Give them money to do it. Then bring the dogs back in a few weeks to get stitches taken out. Then bring them back and enjoy your PETS!!!!!!!! Don't become another BYB.

EDIT- Karren T are you stupid????????
Not getting your dogs fixed will increase the chances of of cancer!!!!!!! Talk about idiot!!!!!!!!!!!!!
