I am looking after a friend's cat. But they haven't changed the litter for ages. So what do I do? Do I need a special bag?

Just your basic trash bag will do...make sure there's no holes of course. there will be some litter stuck to the pan from sitting and drying...with the box over the bag..or the bag around the box, bang lightly on the bottom to loosen the stuck clumps..with the scooper you could scrape the bottom a bit too. Tie the bag up tight and put in the trash can. Not a hard process. Just be sure you have another container of litter to fill the pan back up with before you start all of this or you'll wind up with an empty litter box and a cat scrambling for a place to dig a hole!

I have 8 cats so I am the expert. Just scoop the lumps of pee and doo doo in a plastic garbage bag throw it away. If the box itself is really stinky you may have to dump it all out and wash the box and replace the litter to about half way. Clumping litter is the best.

I would change the litter and wash the box with hot soapy water. Just put the old litter in the garbage. I use brown paper lunch sacks when I scoop my cats' boxes every day and just put the bag in the trash.

You can get special bags to dispose of it but you don't need to just put it in your bin. You could always use soil from your garden if you have no more litter. This can just be put back in the garden after it is used though it needs to be changed after every use.
