Yeah, jumping off what the last answerer said, most eagle scout counselors look to see major leadership ability, and involvement from the troop on a larger level. I really dont see how you would do that with just giving out free smoke detectors...unless you were to get a lot of smoke detectors donated to you, and install them in homes for the elderly or something. Something which shows more involvement.

Im currently going through the paperwork of receiving my eagle scout, and they really want to see something above just an everyday project. They want to see something which will benefit, someone, and they want to see proof that you put some effort into this project.

I think smoke detectors are a good idea to start with, I think that you need to expand on that idea till you have an idea that is feasible as a project.

Best of Luck with your project, and e-mail me if you have any questions,

Are you asking, "Can I give out free smoke detectors as an eagle project?"? I'd say maybe. It depends on how you organize the project, and how willing the eagle coordinator in your council is to accept the project. Keep in mind that the Eagle badge is essentially a badge for leadership and management. You need to show that you are leading a group effort here, and organizing a decently complex project. Can you make this more than a "Please give me smoke detectors", and "Here's a free smoke detector" kind of effort?
