Or should you be honest with the person and not laugh. Would that be awkward?

Well, it depends on the situation. For instance, if it's your best friend telling the crappy joke, I wouldn't laugh. But if you're in a job interview, you MUST at least chuckle! :)

I think laughing (or at least smiling) is the best under the circumstance - I'd hint that it wasn't funny, anyway. If you didn't laugh, it would lead to an uncomfortable silence, in which that person will be quite unfriendly.

Groan and roll your eyes with a smile on your face. I hate it when people fake laugh at my jokes.

Unless its a racist or otherwise offensive joke that conflicts with your values, just smile, chuckle or deflect attention from a joke that falls flat.

I usually laugh sofly, or just smile. I mean, they'll understand it wasn't that funny..and it won't really be that rude as well.
