I have my great grandmothers dining room table with 4 leaves, so it's huge! I can't afford to buy 14 dining room chairs, so I thought i'd buy a few different ones at auctions, yard sales, etc. If i refinish them and use matching upholstry for them will it work in my dining room? or should I save until I can buy matching?

it would look better if you do different finishes or different fabrics on the chairs. to compliment the look, have mis-matched dishes and silverware......it will give either an ecclectic or french country effect depending on the styles of fabrics you choose

That is actually the new look it is called shaggy chic,so you would be in style, but you would not have to paint them or refinish them to match, having ones that are different from one another is even more in demand nowadays according to the shows on tv. They don't even have the upholstery matching either, which would save you tons of money. Good luck. Go to hgtv.com and check it out......one of the places that does that on that website is decorating cents, where they do a whole room for less than $500 and most of the shows I have seen, the dining room chairs would NOT match. Good luck

I think the idea is great, just not sure if you will save any money with it. If you have the time and are going to to all the work yourself, then you will save. You might even find an auction with 14 matching chairs... or more. My sis bought 14 chair kits from a company, but upholstered each seat differently.

It will look ok only if you buy seven PAIRS of chairs. Do you know what I mean? Like only buy a chair if it has an exact match to it. That way, one side of the table will have a matching chair on the other side. Then, I think it will be unique and look nice, too.

No that is actually quite the new look and the furniture manufacturers are making dining room sets with chairs that don't match. I've seen them with wingback chairs at the head and foot of the table with coordinating chairs. It is a tres chic look!

Sounds great saw them do it on an HGTV show earlier this year looked great. Try buying in pairs if possible gives it a more uniform random pattern lol. You also don't have to use the same upholstery. Just coordinating fabrics. Maybe 2 or 3 different patterns that match.

It's your dining room. Whatever works for you is exactly right.
It will probably look good to anyone who isn't too snobby.
