There are a couple of ways to work this out the first is the basic 220 - age, the other being the heart rate reserve method, you best look this up on wikipedia were it will be explained clearly. Then work at 60-75% of that amount, although it has been shown that intervals of high intensity pay higher dividends by boosting the metabolism.

First, consult with your medical doctor on your intended exercise program.
Second, get a watch with a second hand and take your resting pulse.
Third, go to:
http://www.bodyforlife2.com/max_heart_rate.htm
Enter your age and your pulse, and it will do the math for you.
The EASY target is what you need to do for fat burning. Try to stay right around 70% max HR. Keep in mind that you have 20 minutes worth of glucose and glycogen to burn through before your body will even THINK about burning fat. Meaningful fat burning requires 40-60 minutes; not sure if most gyms will allow you to stay on the machine for that long. You may have to machine hop to get that 40-60 minutes in.
Good luck,

What your heart rate should be depends on your age, your current weight and height. There are websites that have graphs that will help you to figure this out for yourself.
