Saline eye wash is the only thing you should ever put in the eyes themselves without specific veterinary instructions. The staining under the eye is common and most pet stores will carry a safe product that can be rubbed on the stained area below the eye.

My boss uses a cleanser that removes even materials from her dogs eyes, it is called Sterile Eye Wash the makers of this wash is Green Guard. You probably could get it a pet store or at your vet. It works good. We work at a place where there is metal pieces all over and the dog comes to work with her and when her eye is irritated or just blinking she puts this wash in her eyes and in about half hour her eye feels better.

NO!!!! Your pet's eyes are not infected.
The pet stores carry a special line of shampoos for this exact staining, costs a couple of dollars, use it each time you bath your dog. I have bichons, they are all white, and we have no problem removing the stains as we do have them groomed once a month.
We also use this at home when we bath them ourselves more frequently during the summer months.
This staining, by the way, is caused as the result of a reaction to an enzyme in your animal's fluids. You will notice that where she licks her light colored hair will also turn color, a pinkish color.
And, never use anything on your puppy that is not specifically made for puppies. They have special needs and adult products are not suitable for them, and ccould hurt them.

Being blonde I would guess she is a cocker/beagle mix? Tear stains are common in several breeds & there is a product or products that are used to remove the tear stains. Ask your veterinarian or pet store or go online & look for a pet tear stain remover...
Sorry I can't give you the product names, but I don't have any breeds that require me to buy this type of product....

I would consult the vet NOT a Grandfather, boric acid can burn her and possibly blind her. I would use a gentle cotton ball with warm water on it(not too hot) and just gently wipe them or use a soft cloth until I called the vet. I use ONLY the MEDS given by the Vet.

You can ask your vet, but a warm wash cloth and some puppy soap will do the job, just try not to get it firectly in the pups eyes.

I have a young shih-tzu...The vet gave as an antibacterial solution; seriously, I think it's soap and water. I use baby shampoo to wash his face, doesn't sting his eyes.
