Jimmy Swaggart started it and he had a huge church until he got caught playing "show and oh-god-please-don't-tell" with a hooker.
I guess other ministers thought that was the secret to his sucess and copied him ( the strut and wave not the other th... oh wait ... eeeeeerm never mind)

That's mostly your TV preachers. And I don't trust them either. They are dramatizing acting putting on a show for TV audience. Preachers and Priest in local churches don't do that as a rule unless they are making a point and telling you to read it for yourself. But that is rare. As far as moving around. Standing in one place is hard on the back and legs. Try standing in one spot for twenty or thirty minutes without moving and you'll see what I mean.

I don't know, but I'm pretty sure it's only the fraudulent televangelists who do that. To them, it's a circus, a show to con money out of people. The more they wave and jump about, the better the show. The better the show, the more people call in with money. Like a tele-thon, a televangelist!

They are just weilding thier great sword.
Revelation 6, v. 3. When He opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, Come and see. Another horse, fiery red, went out. And it was granted to the one that sat thereon, to take peace from the earth, and that people should kill one another; and there was given to him a great sword.

Not all pastors do that. You see that on TV a lot, but not so much in your neighbourhood Churches. Our pastor does not do that, he may walk a bit, probably because to stand in one spot for 20 mins or so may be tiring. And not all pastors yell and scream. That is TV.

They use it as some sort of totem. They think it endears respect, but when they start thumping it and telling me the only way to salvation is to accept some mythological saviour into my life, I tend to get a bit annoyed with them.

So people focus on the hand holding the bible, and not the hand they have down their pants playing with their privates...:)
