First, you need to make the decision. Write it down somewhere you’ll see it every day when you wake up. People quit cold turkey every day; you just need to decide to be one of them.
Second, ask your girlfriend to help you by reminding you of your decision, not to nag you about it. Also, tell your friends/family of your decision so that if you get the urge to smoke you’ll think of their disappointment.
Third, carry gum, a bottle of water, and a stress ball with you always. You need something to distract you from thinking about it. If you could also get one of those little key chain puzzle games, or games on your phone, then once you get an urge, just start playing the game as intense as possible.
Fourth, start a sport, any sport.
Fifth, do you have any hobbies or something that interests you a whole lot? Cars, technology, video games, building, etc. Whatever it is, buy a book/magazine on it and submerge yourself into the topic. Learn everything there is to know about it. You need a hobby/interest to keep you busy during lunch or when you get bored.
Finally, get a calculator and pen and figure out how much money you spend a month on cigarettes and beer. Open up a saving account (not checking) and start putting that much directly into it as soon as you get your paycheck. Decide beforehand what you want to do with that money, like, buy a new TV or pay off the credit card. That way you have a specific goal and once you obtain it you’ll feel more accomplished. You could tell your friends, “Check out my non-smoker money plasma.” Or, “That’s my sober money motorcycle.”
And if you find yourself with a cigarette or beer in your hand, smash it, break it, smother it as fast as you can. Destroy it without thinking!!! If you hesitate, then you’ll give in. Be active! Fight it like you would fight any enemy! Get motivated! You can do it!!!

Try to cut down set aside the money you save not buying cigarettes and use it for a hobby or something you really want. I don't know what cigarettes cost but if you really smoke that much that would be a lot of money each week if you cut down to a pack a day. You might be able to take the fiance out to dinner and get that kiss if you don't eat onions.

Wow! If you don't quit you will die. Simple as that. Look in local telephone book. There are all kinds of organizations that are there for people in your position.
I don't know how old you are, but if you continue you will die. Both are fatal in way/ways or another.
I have taken care of the elderly like you, they're on oxygen. have COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), CHF (Chronic Heart Failure), circulatory problems.
Get help. You most likely already will have a coughing problem. That's the first sign of lung cancer. Your liver will rejuvenate, but your lungs won't. Smoking leaves you weak because your lungs, which had alveoli, (which are grape-like clusters that are involved with in the pulmonary exchange of gases) don't have them any longer. You might say nicotin pops them. Leaving you short of breath.
Just get help.

You sound like you need a good support system for both the smoking and the drinking. You should check into your local AA groups, and also talk to your other half about the kind of support you need.
You can go to this site:
www.quitassist.com
And get very good information on your quest to quit smoking.
I do know that the first thing you need is a good support system of family or friends.
It is very hard to do it alone.
I too, am trying to quit smoking.
Good Luck.

From a non-smoker stand point -- just stop buying cig's & beer. Change your routine, start paying at the pump instead of going inside the gas station, start working out (not that you need it, but it will help you refocus).
Start saving the money that you save ($50 a day roughly) and put that towards your wedding or honeymoon. or something just to have a goal.

I quit cold turkey about 11 months ago and dont miss a thing. Nicotene takes 3 days or 72 hours to get out of your system... you will probably have withdrawls physically but any withdrawl symptoms after 72 hours is all mentally

1-800-STAMP-OUT-SMOKING!! Just kidding! DO NOT USE THAT NUMBER. But you could go to the stampoutsmoking.com website. The best way to do this is to gradually decrease your amount of smoking, or find some other habit, like chewing gum. But if it's serious you may need to call a hot line, or something. And no I don't smoke.

Five packs a day? I don't think you can quit. It was hard for me and the most I went up to was two.
