Why is my JRT breathing hard?

My 5 month old JRT will sometimes breathe hard with her tongue sticking out. I assumed that she was thirsty and give her something to drink, but she will drink a little and continue to breathe like this. Whats wrong?

While it is possible that your Jack has a respitory ailment such as Laryngeal Hypoplasia, Tracheal Collapse, or Tracheal Hypoplasia, most Jack Russell Terriers get winded because their focus and persistence (single-mindedness) overwhelms their body's ability to maintain the physical strain. At the age of five months, it's advisable to have had your JRT to the veterinarian already, and to continue taking your JRT on regular intervals (as suggested by the vet) for appropriate care. Your vet would be the best resource to determine if anything is "wrong" or if this is just due to the JRT's growth and personality.

As a personal owner of a Jack Russel, pick it up and walk around with it, sometimes patting its back, calming him down. Its hyper tension is so strong they react in diferent ways. When it gets older it will shake in its sleep, and shake like its cold. Just try the same concept. Except when its sleeping just put a hand on him and tell him it was a bad dream!

probably nothing. jrt are pretty high strung dogs and they can get really excited (think how you react when you do) and it takes a few minutes for them to calm down. if she is having trouble breathing though you might want to check with a vet to make sure she has no allergies or something wrong.

My Hound pants hard if the room is too hot or has too much humidity. Cool her down by bringing her to a cooler area of the house or outside, if its cooler than inside the house.
